Luke 1:1-80

Luke 1:1

Ἐπειδήπερ since πολλοὶ many ἐπεχείρησαν attempted ἀνατάξασθαι to compile διήγησιν [a] narrative περὶ about τῶν the πεπληροφορημένων having been fulfilled ἐν among ἡμῖν us πραγμάτων. events,

Luke 1:2

Luke 1:3

Luke 1:4

Luke 1:5

Luke 1:6

Luke 1:7

Luke 1:9

Luke 1:11

Luke 1:12

Luke 1:13

Luke 1:14

Luke 1:15

Luke 1:16

Luke 1:17

Luke 1:18

Luke 1:19

Luke 1:20

Luke 1:21

Luke 1:23

Luke 1:24

Luke 1:25

Luke 1:26

Luke 1:27

Luke 1:28

Luke 1:29

Luke 1:30

Luke 1:31

Luke 1:32

Luke 1:33

Luke 1:34

εἶπεν said δὲ but Μαριὰμ Mary πρὸς to τὸν the ἄγγελον, angel, Πῶς how ἔσται will be τοῦτο; this, ἐπεὶ since ἄνδρα [a] man οὐ not γινώσκω. I do know?

Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”

Luke 1:35

Luke 1:36

What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month.

Luke 1:37

For the word of God will never fail.”

Luke 1:38

Luke 1:39

Luke 1:40

Luke 1:41

Luke 1:42

Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed.

Luke 1:43

Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?

Luke 1:44

Luke 1:45

You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.”

Luke 1:46

Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.

Luke 1:47

καὶ and ἠγαλλίασεν rejoiced τὸ the πνεῦμά spirit μου of me ἐπὶ in τῷ - θεῷ God τῷ the σωτῆρί Savior μου. of me,

How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

Luke 1:48

ὅτι for ἐπέβλεψεν he looked ἐπὶ upon τὴν the ταπείνωσιν humble state τῆς of the δούλης bondmaid αὐτοῦ, of him. ἰδοὺ look, γὰρ for ἀπὸ from τοῦ - νῦν now [on] μακαριοῦσίν will consider blessed με me, πᾶσαι all αἱ - γενεαί. generations,

For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed.

Luke 1:49

ὅτι for ἐποίησέν did μοι to me μεγάλα great things the δυνατός, mighty one. καὶ and ἅγιον holy τὸ [is] the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ. of him,

For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.

Luke 1:50

He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him.

Luke 1:51

Luke 1:52

Luke 1:53

He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.

Luke 1:54

Luke 1:55

Luke 1:56

Luke 1:57

When it was time for Elizabeth’s baby to be born, she gave birth to a son.

Luke 1:58

Luke 1:59

When the baby was eight days old, they all came for the circumcision ceremony. They wanted to name him Zechariah, after his father.

Luke 1:60

But Elizabeth said, “No! His name is John!”

Luke 1:61

καὶ and εἶπαν they said πρὸς to αὐτὴν her ὅτι, - Οὐδεὶς no one ἔστιν there is ἐκ from τῆς the συγγενείας relatives σου of you ὃς who καλεῖται is called τῷ - ὀνόματι name τούτῳ. by this.

Luke 1:62

So they used gestures to ask the baby’s father what he wanted to name him.

Luke 1:63

He motioned for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s surprise he wrote, “His name is John.”

Luke 1:64

ἀνεῴχθη was opened τὸ the στόμα mouth καὶ and the γλῶσσα tongue δὲ and αὐτοῦ of him παραχρῆμα at once αὐτοῦ, of him, καὶ and ἐλάλει he was speaking εὐλογῶν praising τὸν - θεόν. God.

Instantly Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God.

Luke 1:65

Awe fell upon the whole neighborhood, and the news of what had happened spread throughout the Judean hills.

Luke 1:66

καὶ and ἔθεντο kept [these things] ἐν in τῇ the καρδίᾳ heart πάντες everyone οἱ - ἀκούσαντες having listened αὐτῶν of them, λέγοντες, saying, Τί what ἄρα then τὸ - παιδίον child τοῦτο this ἔσται; will be? καὶ indeed γὰρ for χεὶρ [the] hand κυρίου of [the] Lord ἦν was μετ᾽ with αὐτοῦ. him.

Everyone who heard about it reflected on these events and asked, “What will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special way.

Luke 1:67

καὶ and Ζαχαρίας, Zechariah, the πατὴρ father αὐτοῦ, of him, ἐπλήσθη was filled πνεύματος Spirit ἁγίου [with the] Holy καὶ and ἐπροφήτευσεν prophesied, λέγων· saying,

Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:

Luke 1:68

Εὐλογητὸς blessed κύριος, [is the] Lord, the θεὸς God τοῦ - Ἰσραήλ, of Israel, ὅτι because ἐπεσκέψατο he visited καὶ and ἐποίησεν accomplished λύτρωσιν redemption τῷ for the λαῷ people αὐτοῦ. of him,

“Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people.

Luke 1:69

καὶ and ἤγειρεν he raised up κέρας [a] horn σωτηρίας of salvation ἡμῖν for us ἐν in οἴκῳ [the] house Δαυεὶδ of David, παιδὸς [the] servant αὐτοῦ, of him,

He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David,

Luke 1:70

καθὼς just as ἐλάλησεν he spoke διὰ through στόματος [the] mouth τῶν of the ἁγίων holy ἀπ᾽ from αἰῶνος [the] age προφητῶν prophets αὐτοῦ. of him,

just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago.

Luke 1:71

σωτηρίαν salvation ἐξ from ἐχθρῶν enemies ἡμῶν our καὶ and ἐκ from χειρὸς [the] hand πάντων of all τῶν of the ones μισούντων hating ἡμᾶς. us,

Now we will be saved from our enemies and from all who hate us.

Luke 1:72

ποιῆσαι to demonstrate ἔλεος mercy μετὰ to τῶν the πατέρων fathers ἡμῶν of us καὶ and μνησθῆναι to remember διαθήκης covenant ἁγίας [the] holy αὐτοῦ— of him,

He has been merciful to our ancestors by remembering his sacred covenant

Luke 1:73

ὅρκον [the] oath ὃν which ὤμοσεν he swore πρὸς to Ἀβραὰμ Abraham τὸν the πατέρα father ἡμῶν, of us,

the covenant he swore with an oath to our ancestor Abraham.

Luke 1:74

τοῦ - δοῦναι to grant ἡμῖν us, ἀφόβως, fearlessly ἐκ from χειρὸς [the] hand ἐχθρῶν of [our] enemies, ῥυσθέντας, having been delivered λατρεύειν to serve αὐτῷ, him

We have been rescued from our enemies so we can serve God without fear,

Luke 1:75

ἐν in ὁσιότητι holiness καὶ and δικαιοσύνῃ righteousness ἐνώπιον before αὐτοῦ him πάσαις all ταῖς the ἡμέραις days ἡμῶν. of us.

in holiness and righteousness for as long as we live.

Luke 1:76

καὶ and σὺ you δέ, also, παιδίον, child, προφήτης [a] prophet ὑψίστου of [the] Most High κληθήσῃ, will be called; προπορεύσῃ you will go ἐνώπιον before ἑτοιμάσαι to prepare γὰρ for κυρίου [the] Lord ὁδοὺς ways αὐτοῦ. his,

“And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord.

Luke 1:77

τοῦ - δοῦναι to give γνῶσιν knowledge σωτηρίας of salvation τῷ to the λαῷ people αὐτοῦ of him ἐν by ἀφέσει [a] forgiveness ἁμαρτιῶν of [the] sins αὐτῶν. of them

You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.

Luke 1:78

διὰ through σπλάγχνα [the] tender ἐλέους mercy θεοῦ of [the] God ἡμῶν, of us, ἐν by οἷς which ἐπισκέψεται will visit ἡμᾶς us ἀνατολὴ [the] rising [sun] ἐξ from ὕψους, [the] height,

Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us,

Luke 1:79

ἐπιφᾶναι to appear τοῖς to the ones ἐν in σκότει darkness καὶ and σκιᾷ in [the] shadow θανάτου of death καθημένοις, sitting, τοῦ - κατευθῦναι to direct τοὺς the πόδας feet ἡμῶν of us εἰς into ὁδὸν [the] way εἰρήνης. of peace.

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.”

Luke 1:80

τὸ the παιδίον child δὲ and ηὔξανε was growing καὶ and ἐκραταιοῦτο was being strengthened πνεύματι. in spirit, καὶ and ἦν he was ἐν in ταῖς the ἐρήμοις desolate places ἕως until ἡμέρας [the] day ἀναδείξεως of [the] manifestation αὐτοῦ of him πρὸς to τὸν - Ἰσραήλ. Israel.

John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.
