Luke 10:1-42

Luke 10:1

μετὰ after ταῦτα these things, δὲ and ἀνέδειξεν appointed the κύριος Lord ἑτέρους others ἑβδομήκοντα seventy- δύο two, καὶ and ἀπέστειλεν he sent αὐτοὺς them ἀνὰ by δύο two δύο two πρὸ before προσώπου [the] face αὐτοῦ of him εἰς into πᾶσαν every πόλιν city καὶ and τόπον place οὗ where ἤμελλεν was about ἔρχεσθαι. to come. αὐτὸς he

The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit.

Luke 10:2

These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.

Luke 10:3

ὑπάγετε, go. ἰδοὺ look, ἀποστέλλω I send ὑμᾶς you ὡς as ἄρνας lambs ἐν in μέσῳ [the] midst λύκων. of wolves.

Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.

Luke 10:4

μὴ not βαστάζετε do carry βαλλάντιον, [a] purse, μὴ not πήραν, [a] beggars bag, μὴ not ὑποδήματα· sandals, καὶ and μηδένα no one κατὰ along τὴν the ὁδὸν way ἀσπάσησθε. greet.

Don’t take any money with you, nor a traveler’s bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.

Luke 10:5

εἰς into ἣν what ἂν ever δ᾽ and εἰσέλθητε you enter οἰκίαν, house, πρῶτον first λέγετε, say, Εἰρήνη peace τῷ - οἴκῳ house τούτῳ. to this.

“Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say, ‘May God’s peace be on this house.’

Luke 10:6

καὶ and ἐὰν if ἐκεῖ there there is υἱὸς [a] son εἰρήνης, of peace, ἐπαναπαήσεται will rest ἐπ᾽ upon αὐτὸν him the εἰρήνη peace ὑμῶν· of you. εἰ otherwise, δὲ μή γε, ἐφ᾽ on ὑμᾶς you ἀνακάμψει. it will return.

If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you.

Luke 10:7

Don’t move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay.

Luke 10:8

καὶ and εἰς into ἣν which ἂν ever πόλιν city εἰσέρχησθε you enter καὶ and δέχωνται they receive ὑμᾶς, you, ἐσθίετε eat τὰ the things παρατιθέμενα being set before ὑμῖν. you

“If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you.

Luke 10:9

καὶ and θεραπεύετε heal τοὺς the ones ἐν in αὐτῇ it [who are] ἀσθενεῖς, sick καὶ and λέγετε say αὐτοῖς, to them, ̓Ήγγικεν has come near ἐφ᾽ to ὑμᾶς you the βασιλεία Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ. of God.

Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.’

Luke 10:10

εἰς into ἣν what ἂν ever δ᾽ and πόλιν city εἰσέλθητε you enter καὶ and μὴ not δέχωνται they do receive ὑμᾶς, you, ἐξελθόντες having gone out εἰς into τὰς the πλατείας streets αὐτῆς of it εἴπατε, say,

But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say,

Luke 10:11

Καὶ even τὸν the κονιορτὸν dust τὸν - κολληθέντα having clung εἰς to ἡμῖν to us ἐκ from τῆς the πόλεως city ὑμῶν of you τοὺς the (our) πόδας feet ἀπομασσόμεθα we shake off [against] ὑμῖν. you. πλὴν but τοῦτο this γινώσκετε— know ὅτι that ἤγγικεν has come near the βασιλεία Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ. of God.

‘We wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show that we have abandoned you to your fate. And know this the Kingdom of God is near!’

Luke 10:12

λέγω I say ὑμῖν, to you ὅτι that Σοδόμοις for Sodom ἐν in τῇ - ἡμέρᾳ day ἐκείνῃ that ἀνεκτότερον more tolerable ἔσται it will be than τῇ - πόλει city ἐκείνῃ. with that.

I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on judgment day.

Luke 10:13

οὐαί woe σοι, to you, Χοραζείν· Chorazin, οὐαί woe σοι, to you, Βηθσαϊδά· Bethsaida ὅτι because εἰ if ἐν in Τύρῳ Tyre καὶ and Σιδῶνι Sidon ἐγενήθησαν had occurred αἱ the δυνάμεις miracles αἱ - γενόμεναι having happened ἐν in ὑμῖν, you, πάλαι long ago ἂν would [have] ἐν in σάκκῳ sackcloth καθήμενοι, sitting καὶ and σποδῷ ash[es] μετενόησαν. they repented.

“What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse.

Luke 10:14

πλήν, but Τύρῳ For Tyre καὶ and Σιδῶνι Sidon ἀνεκτότερον more tolerable ἔσται it will be ἐν in τῇ the κρίσει judgment than ὑμῖν. for you.

Yes, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.

Luke 10:15

καὶ and σὺ you Καφαρναούμ, Capernaum, μὴ surely not ἕως up to οὐρανοῦ heaven ὑψωθήσῃ; will you be exalted? ἕως to τοῦ - ᾅδου Hades καταβήσῃ. you will come down.

And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead.”

Luke 10:16

the one ἀκούων listening ὑμῶν to you, ἐμοῦ to me ἀκούει, listens, καὶ and the one ἀθετῶν rejecting ὑμᾶς you ἐμὲ me ἀθετεῖ. rejects. the one δὲ but ἐμὲ me ἀθετῶν rejecting, ἀθετεῖ rejects τὸν the one ἀποστείλαντά having sent με. me.

Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”

Luke 10:17

ὑπέστρεψαν returned δὲ and οἱ the ἑβδομήκοντα seventy- δύο two μετὰ with χαρᾶς, joy λέγοντες, saying, Κύριε, Lord, καὶ even τὰ the δαιμόνια demons ὑποτάσσεται submit ἡμῖν to us ἐν in τῷ the ὀνόματί name σου. of you.

When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”

Luke 10:18

εἶπεν he said δὲ and αὐτοῖς, to them, Ἐθεώρουν I was seeing τὸν - Σατανᾶν Satan ὡς like ἀστραπὴν lightning ἐκ from τοῦ - οὐρανοῦ heaven πεσόντα. having fallen.

“Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning!

Luke 10:19

ἰδοὺ look, δέδωκα I have given ὑμῖν to you τὴν the ἐξουσίαν authority τοῦ - πατεῖν to walk ἐπάνω on ὄφεων snakes καὶ and σκορπίων, scorpions, καὶ and ἐπὶ on πᾶσαν all τὴν the δύναμιν power τοῦ of the ἐχθροῦ. enemy, καὶ and οὐδὲν nothing οὐ by any means μὴ ὑμᾶς you ἀδικήσει. will injure.

Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.

Luke 10:20

πλὴν but ἐν in τούτῳ this μὴ not χαίρετε do rejoice ὅτι because τὰ the πνεύματα spirits ὑμῖν to you ὑποτάσσεται· submit, χαίρετε rejoice δὲ but ὅτι that τὰ the ὀνόματα names of ὑμῶν you ἐνγέγραπται have been recorded ἐν in τοῖς the οὐρανοῖς. heavens.

But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”

Luke 10:21

At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.

Luke 10:22

πάντα all things μοι to me παρεδόθη was handed over ὑπὸ by τοῦ the πατρός Father μου. of me, καὶ and οὐδεὶς no one γινώσκει knows τίς who ἐστιν is the υἱὸς Son εἰ except μὴ the πατήρ, Father, καὶ and τίς who ἐστιν is the πατὴρ Father εἰ except μὴ the υἱὸς Son καὶ and to whom ἐὰν ever βούληται wishes the υἱὸς Son ἀποκαλύψαι. to reveal [him].

“My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Luke 10:23

καὶ and στραφεὶς having turned πρὸς to τοὺς the μαθητάς, disciples κατ᾽ privately ἰδίαν εἶπεν, he said, Μακάριοι blessed [are] οἱ the ὀφθαλμοὶ eyes οἱ - βλέποντες seeing what βλέπετε. you see.

Then when they were alone, he turned to the disciples and said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen.

Luke 10:24

λέγω I say γὰρ for ὑμῖν, to you ὅτι that πολλοὶ many προφῆται prophets καὶ and βασιλεῖς kings ἠθέλησαν wanted ἰδεῖν to see what ὑμεῖς you βλέπετε, see καὶ and οὐκ not εἶδαν· they did see [them], καὶ and ἀκοῦσαι to hear what ἀκούετε, you hear καὶ and οὐκ not ἤκουσαν. they did hear [them].

I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.”

Luke 10:25

καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, νομικός lawyer τις a certain ἀνέστη stood up ἐκπειράζων testing αὐτὸν him λέγων· saying, Διδάσκαλε, teacher, τί what ποιήσας having done ζωὴν life αἰώνιον eternal κληρονομήσω; will I inherit?

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

Luke 10:26

- δὲ and εἶπεν he said πρὸς to αὐτόν, him, Ἐν in τῷ the νόμῳ law τί what γέγραπται; has been written? πῶς how ἀναγινώσκεις; do you read [it]?

Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”

Luke 10:27

- δὲ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered εἶπεν, he said, Ἀγαπήσεις you will love κύριον [the] Lord τὸν the θεόν God σου of you ἐξ from ὅλης all καρδίας heart σου, of you καὶ and ἐν with ὅλῃ all τῇ the ψυχῇ soul σου, of you καὶ and ἐν with ὅλῃ all τῇ the ἰσχύι strength σου, of you καὶ and ἐν with ὅλῃ all τῇ the διανοίᾳ mind σου· of you, καί, and τὸν the πλησίον neighbor σου of you ὡς as σεαυτόν. yourself.

The man answered, ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Luke 10:28

εἶπεν he said δὲ and αὐτῷ, to him, Ὀρθῶς correctly ἀπεκρίθης. you have answered. τοῦτο this ποίει do καὶ and ζήσῃ. you will live.

“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

Luke 10:29

- δὲ but θέλων wanting δικαιῶσαι to justify ἑαυτόν, himself εἶπεν he said πρὸς to τὸν - Ἰησοῦν, Jesus, Καὶ and τίς who ἐστίν is μου my πλησίον; neighbor?

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Luke 10:30

ὑπολαβὼν having replied, - Ἰησοῦς Jesus εἶπεν· said, ̓Άνθρωπός man τις a certain κατέβαινεν was coming down ἀπὸ from Ἰερουσαλὴμ Jerusalem εἰς to Ἰερειχώ, Jericho καὶ and λῃσταῖς robbers περιέπεσεν· he encountered, οἳ who καὶ both ἐκδύσαντες having stripped αὐτόν, him καὶ and πληγὰς blows ἐπιθέντες, having inflicted ἀπῆλθον they went away ἀφέντες having left (him) ἡμιθανῆ. half dead.

Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

Luke 10:31

κατὰ by συγκυρίαν coincidence δὲ and ἱερεύς priest τις a certain κατέβαινεν was coming down ἐν by τῇ - ὁδῷ way ἐκείνῃ. that καὶ and ἰδὼν having seen αὐτὸν him ἀντιπαρῆλθεν· he passed by on [the] other side.

“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.

Luke 10:32

ὁμοίως likewise δὲ and καὶ also Λευείτης [a] Levite γενόμενος having happened κατὰ upon τὸν the τόπον place, ἐλθὼν having come καὶ and ἰδών, having seen, ἀντιπαρῆλθεν. he passed by on [the] other side.

A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:33

Σαμαρείτης Samaritan δέ but τις a certain ὁδεύων traveling ἦλθεν came κατ᾽ upon αὐτόν, him καὶ and ἰδών, having seen [him], ἐσπλαγχνίσθη. he was filled with compassion,

“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.

Luke 10:34

καὶ and προσελθών, having approached κατέδησεν he bandaged τὰ the τραύματα wounds αὐτοῦ of him ἐπιχέων pouring over [them] ἔλαιον oil καὶ and οἶνον. wine, ἐπιβιβάσας having placed δὲ and αὐτὸν him ἐπὶ upon τὸ the (his) ἴδιον own κτῆνος animal, ἤγαγεν he brought αὐτὸν him εἰς to πανδοχεῖον, an inn καὶ and ἐπεμελήθη cared for αὐτοῦ. him.

Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.

Luke 10:35

καὶ and τὴν the ἐπὶ on αὔριον next day δύο two δηνάρια denarii ἐκβαλὼν having taken out, ἔδωκεν he gave τῷ to the πανδοχεῖ, inn keeper καὶ and εἶπεν, said, Ἐπιμελήθητι take care αὐτοῦ· of him, καὶ and what ever τι ἂν προσδαπανήσῃς, you spend in addition ἐγώ, I, ἐν when τῷ - ἐπανέρχεσθαί return με, I, ἀποδώσω will repay σοι. you.

The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’

Luke 10:36

τίς who τούτων of these τῶν - τριῶν three πλησίον [a] neighbor δοκεῖ seems σοι to you γεγονέναι to have become τοῦ to the one ἐμπεσόντος having fallen in εἰς among τοὺς the λῃστάς; robbers?

“Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.

Luke 10:37

- δὲ and εἶπεν, he said, the one ποιήσας having shown τὸ - ἔλεος mercy μετ᾽ on αὐτοῦ. him. εἶπεν said δὲ and αὐτῷ to him - Ἰησοῦς, Jesus, Πορεύου go καὶ and σὺ you ποίει do ὁμοίως. likewise.

The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

Luke 10:38

ἐν while τῷ - δὲ and πορεύεσθαι went αὐτούς, they αὐτὸς he εἰσῆλθεν entered εἰς into κώμην village τινά· a certain. γυνὴ woman δέ and τις a certain ὀνόματι by [the] name Μάρθα Martha ὑπεδέξατο received αὐτὸν him. εἰς into τὴν the οἰκίαν. house.

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

Luke 10:39

καὶ and τῇδε to this [woman] ἦν was ἀδελφή, [a] sister καλουμένη being called Μαριάμ, Mary, who καὶ also παρακαθεσθεῖσα having sat down beside πρὸς at τοὺς the πόδας feet τοῦ of the κυρίου, Lord ἤκουεν was listening τὸν to the λόγον word αὐτοῦ. of him.

Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.

Luke 10:40

- δὲ but Μάρθα Martha περιεσπᾶτο was being distracted περὶ about πολλὴν much διακονίαν· service. ἐπιστᾶσα having stood by δὲ and εἶπεν, she said, Κύριε, Lord, οὐ no μέλει is it [of] concern σοι to you ὅτι that the ἀδελφή sister μου of me με me μόνην alone κατέλιπεν left διακονεῖν; to serve? εἰπὸν speak, οὖν then, αὐτῇ to her ἵνα that μοι me συναντιλάβηται. she may help.

But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

Luke 10:41

ἀποκριθεὶς having answered δὲ and εἶπεν said αὐτῇ to her the κύριος, Lord, Μάρθα Martha, Μάρθα, Martha, μεριμνᾷς you are worried καὶ and θορυβάζῃ troubled περὶ about πολλά. many things,

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!

Luke 10:42

ἑνὸς one δέ but ἐστιν is χρεία· necessary. Μαριὰμ Mary γὰρ for τὴν the ἀγαθὴν good μερίδα part ἐξελέξατο chose ἥτις which οὐκ not ἀφαιρεθήσεται will be taken away αὐτῆς. from her.

There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
