Luke 11:1-54

Luke 11:1

καὶ and ἐγένετο it came about ἐν while τῷ - εἶναι was αὐτὸν he ἐν in τόπῳ place τινὶ a certain προσευχόμενον· praying, ὡς as ἐπαύσατο, he stopped, εἶπέν said τις a certain one τῶν of the μαθητῶν disciples αὐτοῦ of him πρὸς to αὐτόν, him, Κύριε, Lord, δίδαξον teach ἡμᾶς us προσεύχεσθαι, to pray, καθὼς just as καὶ also Ἰωάνης John ἐδίδαξεν taught τοὺς the μαθητὰς disciples αὐτοῦ. of him.

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Luke 11:2

εἶπεν he said δὲ and αὐτοῖς, to them, ̔Όταν when προσεύχησθε you pray λέγετε· say, Πάτερ, Father, ἁγιασθήτω let be held in reverence τὸ the ὄνομά name σου. of you. ἐλθάτω let come the βασιλεία Kingdom σου. of you.

Jesus said, “This is how you should pray: “Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon.

Luke 11:3

τὸν the ἄρτον bread ἡμῶν of us τὸν - ἐπιούσιον daily δίδου give ἡμῖν to us τὸ - καθ᾽ each ἡμέραν, day.

Give us each day the food we need,

Luke 11:4

καὶ and ἄφες forgive ἡμῖν us τὰς the ἁμαρτίας sins ἡμῶν, of us, καὶ indeed [we] γὰρ for αὐτοὶ ourselves ἀφίομεν are forgiving παντὶ every one ὀφείλοντι being indebted ἡμῖν. to us. καὶ and μὴ not εἰσενέγκῃς may you lead ἡμᾶς us εἰς into πειρασμόν. temptation.

and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation.”

Luke 11:5

καί, and εἶπεν he said πρὸς to αὐτούς· them, Τίς who ἐξ among ὑμῶν you ἕξει will have φίλον [a] friend καὶ and πορεύσεται will come πρὸς to αὐτὸν him μεσονυκτίου, at midnight καὶ and εἴπῃ say αὐτῷ, to him, Φίλε, friend, χρῆσόν lend μοι to me τρεῖς three ἄρτους· loaves,

Then, teaching them more about prayer, he used this story: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You say to him,

Luke 11:6

ἐπειδὴ because φίλος [a] friend μου of me παρεγένετο arrived ἐξ from ὁδοῦ [a] journey πρός to με, me καὶ and οὐκ not ἔχω I do have what παραθήσω I will set before αὐτῷ. him.

‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing for him to eat.’

Luke 11:7

κἀκεῖνος and that one ἔσωθεν within ἀποκριθεὶς having answered εἴπῃ, may say, Μή [do] not μοι me κόπους troubles πάρεχε· cause. ἤδη already the θύρα door κέκλεισται has been shut καὶ and τὰ the παιδία children μου of me μετ᾽ with ἐμοῦ me εἰς in τὴν the κοίτην bed εἰσίν. are. οὐ not δύναμαι I am able ἀναστὰς having arisen δοῦναί to give σοι. to you [anything].

And suppose he calls out from his bedroom, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is locked for the night, and my family and I are all in bed. I can’t help you.’

Luke 11:8

λέγω I say ὑμῖν— to you, εἰ if καὶ even οὐ not δώσει he will-give αὐτῷ to him ἀναστὰς having arisen διὰ because τὸ - εἶναι [he] is φίλον [a] friend αὐτοῦ, of him. διά because of γε yet τὴν the ἀναίδειαν persistence αὐτοῦ of him ἐγερθεὶς having arisen δώσει he will give αὐτῷ to him ὅσων as much as χρῄζει. he needs.

But I tell you this though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence.

Luke 11:9

κἀγὼ and I ὑμῖν you λέγω, tell, αἰτεῖτε, ask, καὶ and δοθήσεται it will be given ὑμῖν. to you, ζητεῖτε, seek, καὶ and εὑρήσετε. you will find, κρούετε, knock καὶ and ἀνοιγήσεται it will be opened ὑμῖν. to you.

“And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

Luke 11:10

πᾶς every γὰρ for one αἰτῶν, asking λαμβάνει. receives καὶ and the one ζητῶν, seeking, εὑρίσκει. finds καὶ and τῷ to the one κρούοντι, knocking ἀνοιγήσεται. it will be opened.

For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

Luke 11:11

τίνα what δὲ and ἐξ among ὑμῶν you τὸν - πατέρα— father [is there] αἰτήσει will ask the υἱὸς son [for] ἰχθύν, [a] fish, καὶ and ἀντὶ instead ἰχθύος of [a] fish ὄφιν [a] snake αὐτῷ to him ἐπιδώσει; will give?

“You fathers if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead?

Luke 11:12

or καὶ even [if] αἰτήσει he will ask ᾠόν, for an egg, ἐπιδώσει will he give αὐτῷ to him σκορπίον; [a] scorpion?

Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not!

Luke 11:13

εἰ if οὖν therefore ὑμεῖς you, πονηροὶ evil [ones] ὑπάρχοντες being οἴδατε know δόματα gifts ἀγαθὰ good διδόναι to give τοῖς to the τέκνοις children ὑμῶν, of you, πόσῳ how much μᾶλλον more the πατὴρ Father - ἐξ from οὐρανοῦ heaven δώσει will give πνεῦμα Spirit ἅγιον [the] Holy τοῖς to the ones αἰτοῦσιν asking αὐτόν. him.

So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

Luke 11:14

καὶ and ἦν he was ἐκβάλλων casting out δαιμόνιον [a] demon κωφόν, mute. ἐγένετο it came about [when] δὲ and τοῦ the δαιμονίου demon ἐξελθόντος, having come out ἐλάλησεν spoke the κωφός. mute καὶ and ἐθαύμασαν were amazed οἱ the ὄχλοι, crowds.

One day Jesus cast out a demon from a man who couldn’t speak, and when the demon was gone, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed,

Luke 11:15

τινὲς some δὲ but ἐξ of αὐτῶν them εἶπαν, said, Ἐν by Βεελζεβούλ, Beelzebul τῷ the ἄρχοντι ruler τῶν of the δαιμονίων, demons ἐκβάλλει he casts out τὰ the δαιμόνια· demons.

but some of them said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.”

Luke 11:16

ἕτεροι others δέ, and πειράζοντες, testing [him], σημεῖον [a] sign ἐξ from οὐρανοῦ heaven ἐζήτουν they were seeking παρ᾽ from αὐτοῦ. him.

Others, trying to test Jesus, demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

Luke 11:17

αὐτὸς he δὲ but εἰδὼς having known αὐτῶν their τὰ - διανοήματα, thoughts εἶπεν said αὐτοῖς, to them, Πᾶσα every βασιλεία kingdom ἐφ᾽ against ἑαυτὴν itself διαμερισθεῖσα having been divided ἐρημοῦται. is laid waste καὶ and οἶκος [a] house [divided] ἐπὶ against οἶκον [a] house πίπτει. falls.

He knew their thoughts, so he said, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A family splintered by feuding will fall apart.

Luke 11:18

εἰ if δὲ and καὶ also - Σατανᾶς Satan ἐφ᾽ against ἑαυτὸν himself διεμερίσθη, was divided, πῶς how σταθήσεται will stand the βασιλεία kingdom αὐτοῦ; of him? ὅτι because λέγετε you say ἐν by Βεελζεβοὺλ Beelzebul [that] ἐκβάλλειν cast out τὰ the δαιμόνια. demons. με I

You say I am empowered by Satan. But if Satan is divided and fighting against himself, how can his kingdom survive?

Luke 11:19

εἰ if δὲ but ἐγὼ I ἐν by Βεελζεβοὺλ Beelzebul ἐκβάλλω cast out τὰ the δαιμόνια, demons, οἱ the υἱοὶ sons ὑμῶν of you ἐν by τίνι whom ἐκβάλλουσιν; do they cast [them] out? διὰ therefore, τοῦτο, αὐτοὶ they ὑμῶν your κριταὶ judges ἔσονται. will be.

And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said.

Luke 11:20

εἰ if δὲ but ἐν by δακτύλῳ [the] finger θεοῦ of God ἐγὼ I ἐκβάλλω cast out τὰ the δαιμόνια, demons, ἄρα then ἔφθασεν came ἐφ᾽ upon ὑμᾶς you the βασιλεία Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ. of God.

But if I am casting out demons by the power of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.

Luke 11:21

ὅταν when the ἰσχυρὸς strong one καθωπλισμένος having been well equipped, φυλάσσῃ guards τὴν the ἑαυτοῦ of himself αὐλήν, palace ἐν in εἰρήνῃ peace ἐστὶν are τὰ the ὑπάρχοντα possessions αὐτοῦ— of him.

For when a strong man is fully armed and guards his palace, his possessions are safe

Luke 11:22

ἐπὰν when δὲ but ἰσχυρότερος [a] stronger one than αὐτοῦ him ἐπελθὼν having come νικήσῃ overcomes αὐτόν, him, τὴν the πανοπλίαν armor ἐφ᾽ on which ἐπεποίθει, he had depended αὐτοῦ of him αἴρει he takes, καὶ and τὰ the σκῦλα spoils αὐτοῦ of him διαδίδωσιν. he distributes.

until someone even stronger attacks and overpowers him, strips him of his weapons, and carries off his belongings.

Luke 11:23

the one μὴ not ὢν being μετ᾽ with ἐμοῦ me κατ᾽ against ἐστίν, is, ἐμοῦ me καὶ and the one μὴ not συνάγων gathering μετ᾽ with ἐμοῦ me σκορπίζει. scatters.

“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.

Luke 11:24

ὅταν when τὸ the ἀκάθαρτον unclean πνεῦμα spirit ἐξέλθῃ goes out ἀπὸ from τοῦ the ἀνθρώπου, man διέρχεται it goes δι᾽ through ἀνύδρων waterless τόπων, places ζητοῦν seeking ἀνάπαυσιν. [a] resting place καὶ and μὴ not εὑρίσκον, finding [one]. τότε then λέγει, it says, Ὑποστρέψω I will return εἰς to τὸν the οἶκόν house μου of me ὅθεν from where ἐξῆλθον. I came out.

“When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, searching for rest. But when it finds none, it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’

Luke 11:25

καὶ and ἐλθὸν having come εὑρίσκει it finds [it] σεσαρωμένον having been swept καὶ and κεκοσμημένον. having been put in order.

So it returns and finds that its former home is all swept and in order.

Luke 11:26

τότε then πορεύεται it goes καὶ and παραλαμβάνει takes ἕτερα other πνεύματα spirits πονηρότερα more evil than ἑαυτοῦ itself, ἑπτά, seven, καὶ and εἰσελθόντα having entered κατοικεῖ it dwells ἐκεῖ. there. καὶ and γίνεται becomes τὰ the ἔσχατα last condition τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου man ἐκείνου of that χείρονα worse than τῶν the πρώτων. first.

Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before.”

Luke 11:27

ἐγένετο it came about δὲ and ἐν while τῷ - λέγειν says αὐτὸν he ταῦτα, these things, ἐπάρασά having lifted up φωνὴν [her] voice εἶπεν said τις a certain γυνὴ woman ἐκ from τοῦ the ὄχλου crowd αὐτῷ, to him, Μακαρία blessed [is] the κοιλία womb - βαστάσασά having carried σε, you καὶ and μαστοὶ [the] breasts οὓς which ἐθήλασας. you sucked.

As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, “God bless your mother the womb from which you came, and the breasts that nursed you!”

Luke 11:28

αὐτὸς he δὲ but εἶπεν, said, Μενοῦν on the contrary μακάριοι blessed [are] οἱ the ones ἀκούοντες hearing τὸν the λόγον word τοῦ - θεοῦ of God καὶ and φυλάσσοντες. observing [it].

Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”

Luke 11:29

τῶν [as] the δὲ and ὄχλων crowds ἐπαθροιζομένων, are gathering even more ἤρξατο he began λέγειν, to say, - γενεὰ generation αὕτη this γενεὰ generation πονηρά an evil ἐστιν, is. σημεῖον [a] sign ζητεῖ. it is seeking, καὶ and σημεῖον [a] sign οὐ not εἰ except μὴ δοθήσεται will be given αὐτῇ to it τὸ the σημεῖον sign Ἰωνᾶ. of Jonah.

As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said, “This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah.

Luke 11:30

καθὼς just as γὰρ for ἐγένετο became Ἰωνᾶς Jonah τοῖς to the Νινευείταις Ninevites σημεῖον [a] sign, οὕτως so ἔσται will be καὶ also the υἱὸς Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου of Man τῇ - γενεᾷ generation ταύτῃ. to this.

What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God.

Luke 11:31

βασίλισσα [the] queen νότου of [the] south ἐγερθήσεται will be raised μετὰ with τῶν the ἀνδρῶν men ἐν at τῇ the κρίσει judgment τῆς - γενεᾶς generation ταύτης of this καὶ and κατακρινεῖ she will condemn αὐτούς, them, ὅτι because ἦλθεν she came ἐκ from τῶν the περάτων ends τῆς of the γῆς earth ἀκοῦσαι to hear τὴν the σοφίαν wisdom Σολομῶνος. of Solomon, καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, πλεῖον one greater than Σολομῶνος Solomon ὧδε. [is] here.

“The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here but you refuse to listen.

Luke 11:32

ἄνδρες men, Νινευεῖται Ninevites ἀναστήσονται will stand up ἐν at τῇ the κρίσει judgment μετὰ with τῆς - γενεᾶς generation ταύτης this καὶ and κατακρινοῦσιν will condemn αὐτήν, it. ὅτι because μετενόησαν they repented εἰς at τὸ the κήρυγμα proclamation Ἰωνᾶ. of Jonah, καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, πλεῖον one greater than Ἰωνᾶ Jonah ὧδε. [is] here.

The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here but you refuse to repent.

Luke 11:33

οὐδεὶς no one λύχνον [a] lamp ἅψας having lit εἰς in κρύπτην [a] hidden place τίθησιν puts [it], οὐδὲ neither ὑπὸ under τὸν the μόδιον, measuring bucket, ἀλλ᾽ but ἐπὶ on τὴν the λυχνίαν, lampstand, ἵνα in order that οἱ the ones εἰσπορευόμενοι entering τὸ the φῶς light βλέπωσιν. may see.

“No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.

Luke 11:34

the λύχνος lamp τοῦ of the σώματός body ἐστιν is the ὀφθαλμός eye σου. of you. ὅταν when the ὀφθαλμός eye σου of you ἁπλοῦς single (healthy) ᾖ, is, καὶ then ὅλον [the] entire τὸ - σῶμά body σου of you φωτεινόν full of light ἐστιν. is. ἐπὰν when δὲ but πονηρὸς sick ᾖ, it is, καὶ then τὸ the σῶμά body σου of you σκοτεινόν. “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when it is unhealthy, your body is filled with darkness.

Luke 11:35

σκόπει see to it οὖν then [that], μὴ not τὸ the φῶς light τὸ - ἐν in σοὶ you σκότος darkness ἐστίν. is.

Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness.

Luke 11:36

εἰ if οὖν therefore, τὸ the σῶμά body σου of you ὅλον whole φωτεινόν, [is] full of light, μὴ not ἔχον having μέρος part τι any σκοτεινόν, dark, ἔσται it will be φωτεινὸν full of light ὅλον, all ὡς as ὅταν when the λύχνος lamp τῇ with the ἀστραπῇ light φωτίζῃ shines σε. on you.

As Jesus was speaking, one of the Pharisees invited him home for a meal. So he went in and took his place at the table.

Luke 11:38

His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom.

Luke 11:39

εἶπεν said δὲ but the κύριος Lord πρὸς to αὐτόν, him, Νῦν now ὑμεῖς you οἱ - Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees τὸ the ἔξωθεν outside τοῦ of the ποτηρίου cup καὶ and τοῦ the πίνακος dish καθαρίζετε, you clean, τὸ the δὲ but ἔσωθεν inside ὑμῶν— of you γέμει is full ἁρπαγῆς of greed καὶ and πονηρίας. wickedness.

Then the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy full of greed and wickedness!

Luke 11:40

So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.

Luke 11:42

ἀλλὰ but οὐαὶ woe ὑμῖν to you τοῖς - Φαρισαίοις, Pharisees, ὅτι because ἀποδεκατοῦτε you tithe τὸ the ἡδύοσμον mint καὶ and τὸ the πήγανον rue καὶ and πᾶν every λάχανον, herb καὶ and παρέρχεσθε you disregard τὴν the κρίσιν justice καὶ and τὴν the ἀγάπην love τοῦ - θεοῦ. of God. ταῦτα these things ποιῆσαι, to do δὲ but ἔδει it was necessary κἀκεῖνα and those μὴ not παρεῖναι. to disregard.

“Teacher,” said an expert in religious law, “you have insulted us, too, in what you just said.”

Luke 11:46

- δὲ but εἶπεν, he said, Καὶ also ὑμῖν to you τοῖς - νομικοῖς lawyers οὐαί· woe, ὅτι because φορτίζετε you burden τοὺς - ἀνθρώπους men φορτία [with] loads δυσβάστακτα, difficult to carry, καὶ and αὐτοὶ yourselves ἑνὶ [with] one τῶν of the δακτύλων fingers ὑμῶν of you οὐ not προσψαύετε you do touch τοῖς the φορτίοις. loads.

“Yes,” said Jesus, “what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden.

But in fact, you stand as witnesses who agree with what your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and you join in their crime by building the monuments!

Luke 11:49
