Luke 13:1-35

Luke 13:1

δέ now ἐν at παρῆσαν there was present τινες some ἀπαγγέλλοντες reporting αὐτῷ same τῷ the καιρῷ time αὐτῷ to him περὶ about τῶν the Γαλιλαίων Galileans ὧν whose τὸ - αἷμα blood ἔμιξεν mixed μετὰ with Πειλᾶτος Pilate τῶν the θυσιῶν sacrifices αὐτῶν. of them.

About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple.

Luke 13:2

καὶ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered εἶπεν he said αὐτοῖς, to them, Δοκεῖτε do you think ὅτι that οἱ - Γαλιλαῖοι Galileans οὗτοι these ἁμαρτωλοὶ sinners παρὰ above πάντας all τοὺς the Γαλιλαίους Galileans ἐγένοντο, were, ὅτι because ταῦτα these things πεπόνθασιν; they have suffered?

“Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered?

Luke 13:3

οὐχί, no, λέγω I tell ὑμῖν, to you, ἀλλ᾽ but ἐὰν unless μὴ μετανοῆτε you repent, πάντες, all [of] ὁμοίως, likewise ἀπολεῖσθε. you will perish.

Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.

Luke 13:4

or ἐκεῖνοι those οἱ - δεκαοκτὼ eighteen ἐφ᾽ upon οὓς whom ἔπεσεν fell the πύργος tower ἐν in τῷ - Σιλωὰμ Siloam καὶ and ἀπέκτεινεν it killed αὐτούς, them, δοκεῖτε do you think ὅτι that αὐτοὶ they ὀφειλέται sinners ἐγένοντο were παρὰ above πάντας all τοὺς the ἀνθρώπους men τοὺς - κατοικοῦντας living in Ἰερουσαλήμ; Jerusalem?

And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem?

Luke 13:5

οὐχί, no, λέγω I tell ὑμῖν you, ἀλλ᾽ but ἐὰν unless μὴ μετανοήσητε you repent πάντες, all [of] ὡσαύτως, in [the] same way ἀπολεῖσθε. you will perish.

No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.”

Luke 13:6

ἔλεγεν he was speaking δὲ and ταύτην this τὴν - παραβολήν· parable. συκῆν [a] fig tree εἶχέν had πεφυτευμένην having been planted τις a certain man ἐν in τῷ the ἀμπελῶνι vineyard αὐτοῦ of him, καὶ and ἦλθεν he came ζητῶν seeking καρπὸν fruit ἐν on αὐτῇ, it καὶ and οὐχ not εὗρεν. he did find [any].

Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.

Luke 13:7

εἶπεν he said δὲ so πρὸς to τὸν the ἀμπελουργόν, gardener, Ἰδοὺ look, τρία three ἔτη years ἀφ᾽ since οὗ ἔρχομαι I come ζητῶν seeking καρπὸν fruit ἐν on τῇ - συκῇ fig tree ταύτῃ, this καὶ and οὐχ not εὑρίσκω. I did find [any]. ἔκκοψον cut down αὐτήν, it, τὴν the γῆν soil ἱνατί why καὶ even καταργεῖ. is it using up?

Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’

Luke 13:8

- δὲ but ἀποκριθεὶς having answered λέγει he says αὐτῷ, to him, Κύριε, sir (lord), ἄφες leave αὐτὴν it καὶ also τοῦτο this τὸ - ἔτος, year, ἕως until ὅτου σκάψω I may dig περὶ around αὐτὴν it καὶ and βάλω may throw κόπρια. manure [on it],

“The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer.

Luke 13:9

κἂν and if μὲν indeed on one [hand] ποιήσῃ it produces καρπὸν fruit εἰς in τὸ the μέλλον. future; εἰ otherwise [on the other hand], δὲ μή γε, ἐκκόψεις you will cut down αὐτήν. it.

If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’”

Luke 13:10

One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,

Luke 13:11

καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, γυνὴ [a] woman πνεῦμα [a] spirit ἔχουσα having ἀσθενείας of illness ἔτη years δεκαοκτώ· eighteen καὶ and ἦν she was συνκύπτουσα being bent double καὶ and μὴ not δυναμένη being able ἀνακύψαι to stand upright εἰς completely. τὸ - παντελές.

he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.

Luke 13:12

ἰδὼν having seen δὲ and αὐτὴν her, - Ἰησοῦς, Jesus προσεφώνησεν called out καὶ and εἶπεν said αὐτῇ, to her, Γύναι, woman, ἀπολέλυσαι you have been set free τῆς from the ἀσθενείας illness σου. of you,

When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”

Luke 13:13

καὶ and ἐπέθηκεν he placed upon τὰς the (his) χεῖρας, hands. αὐτῇ her καὶ and παραχρῆμα immediately ἀνωρθώθη. she was restored καὶ and ἐδόξαζεν she was glorifying τὸν - θεόν. God.

Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!

Luke 13:14

δὲ and the ἀρχισυνάγωγος synagogue ruler, ἀγανακτῶν being indignant ὅτι that τῷ on the σαββάτῳ Sabbath ἐθεράπευσεν healed - Ἰησοῦς. Jesus, ἀποκριθεὶς having answered ἔλεγεν he was saying τῷ to the ὄχλῳ crowd ὅτι, - ̔Ὲξ six ἡμέραι days εἰσὶν there are ἐν in αἷς which δεῖ it is necessary ἐργάζεσθαι· to work. ἐν on αὐταῖς them οὖν therefore ἐρχόμενοι coming, θεραπεύεσθε, be healed καὶ and μὴ not τῇ on the τοῦ of the ἡμέρᾳ day σαββάτου. Sabbath.

But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”

Luke 13:15

ἀπεκρίθη answered δὲ and αὐτῷ him the κύριος Lord καὶ and εἶπεν, said, Ὑποκριταί, hypocrites, ἕκαστος each ὑμῶν of you τῷ on the σαββάτῳ, Sabbath οὐ not λύει does he untie τὸν the βοῦν ox αὐτοῦ of him or τὸν the ὄνον donkey ἀπὸ from τῆς the φάτνης manger καὶ and ἀπάγων leading, ποτίζει; it drinks?

But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?

Luke 13:16

ταύτην this one δὲ but θυγατέρα [a] daughter Ἀβραὰμ of Abraham οὖσαν, being, ἣν whom ἔδησεν bound - Σατανᾶς Satan ἰδοὺ look, δέκα ten καὶ and ὀκτὼ eight ἔτη. years, οὐκ not ἔδει was it necessary [for her] λυθῆναι to be set free ἀπὸ from τοῦ - δεσμοῦ bond τούτου this τῇ on the τοῦ of the ἡμέρᾳ day σαββάτου; Sabbath?

This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”

Luke 13:17

καὶ and ταῦτα these things λέγοντος [by] saying αὐτοῦ he, κατῃσχύνοντο were being put to shame οἱ the ones πάντες all ἀντικείμενοι being opposed αὐτῷ. to him, καὶ and πᾶς all the ὄχλος crowd ἔχαιρεν was rejoicing ἐπὶ over πᾶσιν all τοῖς the ἐνδόξοις glorious deeds τοῖς - γινομένοις being accomplished ὑπ᾽ by αὐτοῦ. him.

This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

Luke 13:18

ἔλεγεν he was saying οὖν, therefore, Τίνι to what ὁμοία comparison ἐστὶν is the βασιλεία Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ; of God καὶ and τίνι to what ὁμοιώσω will I compare αὐτήν; it?

Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?

Luke 13:19

ὁμοία like ἐστὶν it is κόκκῳ seed σινάπεως [a] mustard, ὃν which λαβὼν having taken ἔβαλεν threw ἄνθρωπος [a] man εἰς into κῆπον [a] garden ἑαυτοῦ· of himself, καὶ and ηὔξησεν it grew καὶ and ἐγένετο became εἰς - δένδρον, [a] tree, καὶ and τὰ the πετεινὰ birds τοῦ of the οὐρανοῦ sky κατεσκήνωσεν nested ἐν in τοῖς the κλάδοις branches αὐτοῦ. of it.

It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.”

Luke 13:20

καὶ and πάλιν again εἶπεν, he said, Τίνι to what ὁμοιώσω will I compare τὴν the βασιλείαν Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ; of God?

He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like?

Luke 13:21

ὁμοία like ἐστὶν it is ζύμῃ. leaven, ἣν which λαβοῦσα having taken ἐνέκρυψεν hid γυνὴ [a] woman, εἰς in ἀλεύρου wheat flour σάτα measures τρία, three ἕως until οὗ ἐζυμώθη was leavened ὅλον. [the] whole [batch].

It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

Luke 13:22

καὶ and διεπορεύετο he was traveling κατὰ throughout πόλεις cities καὶ and κώμας, villages διδάσκων, teaching καὶ and πορείαν [his] way ποιούμενος making εἰς to Ἱεροσόλυμα. Jerusalem.

Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem.

Luke 13:23

εἶπεν said δέ and τις someone αὐτῷ, to him, Κύριε, Lord, εἰ if ὀλίγοι few οἱ [are] the ones σῳζόμενοι; being saved? - δὲ and εἶπεν he said πρὸς to αὐτούς, them,

Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He replied,

Luke 13:24

Ἀγωνίζεσθε strive εἰσελθεῖν to enter διὰ through τῆς the στενῆς narrow θύρας· door, ὅτι because πολλοί, many, λέγω I say ὑμῖν, to you, ζητήσουσιν will seek εἰσελθεῖν to enter καὶ and οὐκ not ἰσχύσουσιν. they will be able to.

“Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail.

Luke 13:25

ἀφ᾽ when once οὗ ἂν would [have] ἐγερθῇ arisen the οἰκοδεσπότης master of [the] house καὶ and ἀποκλείσῃ he closes τὴν the θύραν, door καὶ and ἔξω outside ἄρξησθε you begin ἑστάναι to stand καὶ and κρούειν to knock [on] τὴν the θύραν door λέγοντες, saying, Κύριε, sir (lord), ἄνοιξον open [up] ἡμῖν. for us, καὶ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered ἐρεῖ he will say ὑμῖν, to you, Οὐκ not οἶδα I do know ὑμᾶς you πόθεν from where ἐστέ. you are.

When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’

Luke 13:26

τότε then ἄρξεσθε you will begin λέγειν, to say, Ἐφάγομεν we ate ἐνώπιόν before σου you καὶ and ἐπίομεν we drank, καὶ and ἐν in ταῖς the πλατείαις streets ἡμῶν of us ἐδίδαξας. you taught.

Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

Luke 13:27

καὶ and ἐρεῖ, he will speak λέγων saying ὑμῖν, to you, Οὐκ not οἶδα I do know ὑμᾶς you πόθεν from where ἐστέ. you are. ἀπόστητε go away ἀπ᾽ from ἐμοῦ, me, πάντες all ἐργάται workers ἀδικίας. of unrighteousness.

And he will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’

Luke 13:28

ἐκεῖ there ἔσται will be - κλαυθμὸς weeping καὶ and - βρυγμὸς grinding τῶν of the ὀδόντων, teeth, ὅταν when ὄψησθε you will see Ἀβραάμ, Abraham καὶ and Ἰσαάκ, Isaac καὶ and Ἰακώβ, Jacob καὶ and πάντας all τοὺς the προφήτας prophets ἐν in τῇ the βασιλείᾳ Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ, of God, ὑμᾶς you δὲ but ἐκβαλλομένους being thrown out ἔξω. outside.

“There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.

Luke 13:29

καὶ and ἥξουσιν— they will come ἀπὸ from ἀνατολῶν [the] east καὶ and δυσμῶν [the] west καὶ and ἀπὸ from βορρᾶ north καὶ and νότου— south καὶ and ἀνακλιθήσονται they will recline at table ἐν in τῇ the βασιλείᾳ Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ. of God.

And people will come from all over the world from east and west, north and south to take their places in the Kingdom of God.

Luke 13:30

καὶ and ἰδού· look, εἰσὶν there are ἔσχατοι last [ones] οἳ who ἔσονται will be πρῶτοι· first καὶ and εἰσὶν there are πρῶτοι first [ones] οἳ who ἔσονται will be ἔσχατοι. last.

And note this: Some who seem least important now will be the greatest then, and some who are the greatest now will be least important then.”

Luke 13:31

ἐν in αὐτῇ same τῇ the ὥρᾳ hour προσῆλθάν approached τινες some Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees λέγοντες saying αὐτῷ, to him, ̓Έξελθε depart καὶ and πορεύου go ἐντεῦθεν· from here, ὅτι because Ἡρῴδης Herod θέλει wants σε you ἀποκτεῖναι. to kill.

At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”

Luke 13:32

καὶ and εἶπεν he said αὐτοῖς, to them, Πορευθέντες having gone εἴπατε tell τῇ - ἀλώπεκι fox ταύτῃ, this, ἰδοὺ look, ἐκβάλλω I cast out δαιμόνια demons καὶ and ἰάσεις healings ἀποτελῶ I perform σήμερον today καὶ and αὔριον· tomorrow καὶ and τῇ on the τρίτῃ third [day] τελειοῦμαι. I will be finished.

Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.

Luke 13:33

πλὴν but δεῖ it is necessary με, for me σήμερον, today καὶ and αὔριον, tomorrow καὶ and τῇ the one ἐχομένῃ following πορεύεσθαι. to travel, ὅτι because οὐκ not ἐνδέχεται it is possible [for] προφήτην [a] prophet ἀπολέσθαι to die ἔξω outside Ἰερουσαλήμ. Jerusalem.

Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!

Luke 13:34

Ἰερουσαλήμ, Jerusalem, Ἰερουσαλήμ, Jerusalem, the one ἀποκτείνουσα killing τοὺς the προφήτας prophets καὶ and λιθοβολοῦσα stoning τοὺς the ones ἀπεσταλμένους having been sent πρὸς to αὐτήν. her, ποσάκις how often ἠθέλησα I wanted ἐπισυνάξαι to gather τὰ the τέκνα children σου of you ὃν which τρόπον in [the same] manner ὄρνις [a] hen τὴν - ἑαυτῆς her νοσσιὰν brood [gathers] ὑπὸ under τὰς the (her) πτέρυγας, wings, καὶ and οὐκ not ἠθελήσατε. you were willing.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.

Luke 13:35

ἰδού, look, ἀφίεται is left ὑμῖν to you the οἶκος house ὑμῶν. of you. λέγω I say δὲ but ὑμῖν to you, οὐ by no means μὴ ἴδητέ you may see με me ἕως until εἴπητε, you may say, Εὐλογημένος having been blessed [is] the one ἐρχόμενος coming ἐν in ὀνόματι [the] name κυρίου. of [the] Lord.

And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD!’”
