Luke 14:1-35

Luke 14:1

καὶ and ἐγένετο it came about ἐν while τῷ - ἐλθεῖν went αὐτὸν he εἰς into οἶκόν [a] house τινος of a certain one τῶν of the ἀρχόντων leaders τῶν of the Φαρισαίων Pharisees σαββάτῳ on [the] Sabbath φαγεῖν to eat ἄρτον, bread καὶ and αὐτοὶ they ἦσαν were παρατηρούμενοι watching closely αὐτόν. him.

One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him closely.

Luke 14:2

There was a man there whose arms and legs were swollen.

Luke 14:3

Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in religious law, “Is it permitted in the law to heal people on the Sabbath day, or not?”

Luke 14:4

οἱ - δὲ but ἡσύχασαν, they were silent. καὶ and ἐπιλαβόμενος having taken hold [of him] ἰάσατο he healed αὐτὸν him καὶ and ἀπέλυσεν. sent [him] away.

When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away.

Luke 14:5

καὶ and πρὸς to αὐτοὺς them εἶπεν, he said, Τίνος who ὑμῶν of you [having] υἱὸς [a] son or βοῦς an ox εἰς into φρέαρ [a] well πεσεῖται, will fall, καὶ and οὐκ not εὐθέως immediately ἀνασπάσει will lift out αὐτὸν him ἐν on τοῦ of the ἡμέρᾳ [the] day σαββάτου; Sabbath?

Then he turned to them and said, “Which of you doesn’t work on the Sabbath? If your son or your cow falls into a pit, don’t you rush to get him out?”

Luke 14:6

Again they could not answer.

Luke 14:7

When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit in the seats of honor near the head of the table, he gave them this advice:

Luke 14:8

“When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited?

Luke 14:9

Luke 14:10

“Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests.

Luke 14:11

ὅτι because πᾶς every one ὑψῶν exalting ἑαυτὸν himself ταπεινωθήσεται, will be humbled. καὶ and the one ταπεινῶν humbling ἑαυτὸν himself ὑψωθήσεται. will be exalted.

For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Luke 14:12

Luke 14:13

ἀλλ᾽ but ὅταν when δοχὴν [a] banquet ποιῇς, you prepare, κάλει invite πτωχούς, [the] poor ones, ἀναπείρους, [the] crippled ones, χωλούς, [the] lame ones, τυφλούς· [the] blind ones;

Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

Luke 14:14

Luke 14:15

Luke 14:16

Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations.

Luke 14:17

καὶ and ἀπέστειλεν he sent τὸν the δοῦλον slave αὐτοῦ, of him τῇ at the ὥρᾳ hour τοῦ of the δείπνου dinner εἰπεῖν to say τοῖς to the ones κεκλημένοις, having been invited, ̓Έρχεσθε, come, ὅτι because ἤδη now ἕτοιμά ready ἐστιν. it is.

When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’

Luke 14:18

Luke 14:19

Luke 14:20

Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

Luke 14:21

Luke 14:22

Luke 14:23

Luke 14:24

Luke 14:25

Luke 14:26

Luke 14:27

Luke 14:28

“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?

Luke 14:29

ἵνα lest μήποτε, θέντος having laid αὐτοῦ his θεμέλιον foundation καὶ and μὴ not ἰσχύοντος being able ἐκτελέσαι, to finish [it], πάντες everyone οἱ - θεωροῦντες seeing [it] ἄρξωνται may begin αὐτῷ him ἐμπαίζειν, to ridicule

Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you.

Luke 14:30

λέγοντες saying, ὅτι, - Οὗτος this - ἄνθρωπος man ἤρξατο began οἰκοδομεῖν to build καὶ and οὐκ not ἴσχυσεν was able ἐκτελέσαι. to finish.

They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’

Luke 14:31

Luke 14:32

εἰ otherwise, δὲ μή γε, ἔτι while αὐτοῦ he πόρρω far away ὄντος being πρεσβείαν an ambassador ἀποστείλας having sent ἐρωτᾷ he asks τὰ the [terms] πρὸς for εἰρήνην. peace.

Luke 14:33

οὕτως so οὖν then πᾶς every [one] ἐξ of ὑμῶν you ὃς who οὐκ not ἀποτάσσεται does renounce πᾶσιν all τοῖς - ἑαυτοῦ his ὑπάρχουσιν possessions οὐ not δύναται is able εἶναί to be μου my μαθητής. disciple.

So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.

Luke 14:34

καλὸν good οὖν then τὸ - ἅλας· [is] salt. ἐὰν if δὲ but καὶ even τὸ the ἅλας salt μωρανθῇ, should become tasteless, ἐν with τίνι what ἀρτυθήσεται; will it be seasoned?

“Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again?

Luke 14:35

οὔτε neither εἰς for γῆν soil οὔτε nor εἰς for κοπρίαν manure εὔθετόν suitable ἐστιν· is it; ἔξω out βάλλουσιν they throw αὐτό. it. the one ἔχων having ὦτα ears ἀκούειν to hear ἀκουέτω. let that one hear.

Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
