Luke 5:1-39

Luke 5:1

ἐγένετο it came about [that] δὲ now ἐν while τῷ - τὸν the ὄχλον crowd ἐπικεῖσθαι was pressing upon αὐτῷ him καὶ and ἀκούειν listening τὸν to the λόγον word τοῦ - θεοῦ, of God, καὶ - αὐτὸς he ἦν was ἑστὼς standing παρὰ beside τὴν the λίμνην Lake Γεννησαρέτ. of Gennesaret,

One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God.

Luke 5:2

καὶ and εἶδεν he saw πλοῖα boats δύο two ἑστῶτα having been παρὰ beside τὴν the λίμνην, lake. οἱ the δὲ but ἁλεεῖς fishermen αὐτῶν them ἀπ᾽ from ἀποβάντες having gone away ἔπλυνον were washing τὰ the δίκτυα. nets.

He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.

Luke 5:3

ἐμβὰς embarking δὲ and εἰς into ἓν one τῶν of the πλοίων, boats, which ἦν was Σίμωνος, Simons, ἠρώτησεν he asked αὐτὸν him ἀπὸ from τῆς the γῆς land ἐπαναγαγεῖν to put out ὀλίγον. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.

Luke 5:4

ὡς when δὲ and ἐπαύσατο he stopped λαλῶν, speaking, εἶπεν he said πρὸς to τὸν - Σίμωνα, Simon, Ἐπανάγαγε put out εἰς into τὸ the βάθος deep [water] καὶ and χαλάσατε let down τὰ the δίκτυα nets ὑμῶν of you εἰς for ἄγραν. [a] catch.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”

Luke 5:5

καὶ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered, Σίμων Simon εἶπεν, said, Ἐπιστάτα, Master, δι᾽ throughout ὅλης [the] whole νυκτὸς night κοπιάσαντες having labored οὐδὲν nothing ἐλάβομεν. we caught. ἐπὶ on account of τῷ the ῥήματί word δὲ but σου, of you χαλάσω I will let down τὰ the δίκτυα. nets.

“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”

Luke 5:6

καὶ and τοῦτο this ποιήσαντες having done συνέκλεισαν they enclosed πλῆθος multitude πολὺ [a] great, ἰχθύων of fish διερήσσετο were being torn δὲ and τὰ the δίκτυα nets αὐτῶν. of them.

And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!

Luke 5:7

καὶ and κατένευσαν they signaled τοῖς for the μετόχοις partners ἐν in τῷ the ἑτέρῳ other πλοίῳ boat [that] τοῦ - ἐλθόντας having come συλλαβέσθαι to help αὐτοῖς them. καὶ and ἦλθαν, they came καὶ and ἔπλησαν they filled ἀμφότερα both τὰ - πλοῖα boats ὥστε so as βυθίζεσθαι to be sinking αὐτά. them.

A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.

Luke 5:8

ἰδὼν having seen [this] δὲ and, Σίμων Simon Πέτρος, Peter προσέπεσεν fell down at τοῖς the γόνασιν knees Ἰησοῦ of Jesus λέγων, saying, ̓Έξελθε depart ἀπ᾽ from ἐμοῦ— me, ὅτι for ἀνὴρ man ἁμαρτωλός [a] sinful εἰμι, I am, κύριε. Lord.

When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me I’m such a sinful man.”

Luke 5:9

θάμβος astonishment περιέσχεν seized γὰρ for αὐτόν, him καὶ and πάντας all τοὺς the ones σὺν with αὐτῷ him ἐπὶ on account of τῇ the ἄγρᾳ catch τῶν - ἰχθύων of fish ὧν which συνέλαβον. they took,

For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.

Luke 5:10

ὁμοίως likewise δὲ and καὶ also Ἰάκωβον James καὶ and Ἰωάνην, John υἱοὺς [the] sons Ζεβεδαίου, of Zebedee, οἳ who ἦσαν were κοινωνοὶ partners τῷ - Σίμωνι. with Simon. καὶ and εἶπεν said πρὸς to τὸν - Σίμωνα Simon - Ἰησοῦς, Jesus, Μὴ not φοβοῦ· do be afraid. ἀπὸ from τοῦ - νῦν now [on] ἀνθρώπους men ἔσῃ you will ζωγρῶν. catch.

His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”

Luke 5:11

καὶ and καταγαγόντες having left behind τὰ the πλοῖα boats ἐπὶ on τὴν the γῆν, land [and], ἀφέντες having left πάντα all things ἠκολούθησαν they followed αὐτῷ. him.

And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

Luke 5:12

καὶ and ἐγένετο it came about ἐν while τῷ - εἶναι to be αὐτὸν he [was] ἐν in μιᾷ one τῶν of the πόλεων, cities καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, ἀνὴρ [there was a] man πλήρης full λέπρας. of leprosy. ἰδὼν having seen δὲ and τὸν - Ἰησοῦν, Jesus, πεσὼν having fallen ἐπὶ on πρόσωπον [his] face ἐδεήθη he begged αὐτοῦ him λέγων, saying, Κύριε, Lord, ἐὰν if θέλῃς, you are willing δύνασαί you are able με me καθαρίσαι. to cleanse.

In one of the villages, Jesus met a man with an advanced case of leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground, begging to be healed. “Lord,” he said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”

Luke 5:13

καὶ and ἐκτείνας having stretched out τὴν the (his) χεῖρα hand, ἥψατο he touched αὐτοῦ. him λέγων, saying, Θέλω, I am willing, καθαρίσθητι. be cleansed. καὶ and εὐθέως immediately the λέπρα leprosy ἀπῆλθεν departed ἀπ᾽ from αὐτοῦ. him.

Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.

Luke 5:14

καὶ and αὐτὸς he παρήγγειλεν gave orders αὐτῷ to him μηδενὶ no one εἰπεῖν. to tell, ἀλλὰ but ἀπελθὼν having departed δεῖξον show σεαυτὸν yourself τῷ to the ἱερεῖ. priest καὶ and προσένεγκε make an offering περὶ for τοῦ the καθαρισμοῦ cleansing σου of you καθὼς as προσέταξεν commanded Μωυσῆς· Moses, εἰς for μαρτύριον [a] testimony αὐτοῖς. to them.

Then Jesus instructed him not to tell anyone what had happened. He said, “Go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”

Luke 5:15

διήρχετο he was spreading δὲ but μᾶλλον, [even] more the λόγος word περὶ about αὐτοῦ, him, καὶ and συνήρχοντο were assembling ὄχλοι crowds πολλοὶ many ἀκούειν to listen καὶ and θεραπεύεσθαι to be healed ἀπὸ from τῶν the ἀσθενειῶν sicknesses αὐτῶν. of them.

But despite Jesus' instructions, the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases.

Luke 5:16

αὐτὸς he δὲ but ἦν was ὑποχωρῶν withdrawing ἐν in ταῖς the ἐρήμοις desolate places καὶ and προσευχόμενος. praying.

But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.

Luke 5:17

καὶ and ἐγένετο it came about ἐν on μιᾷ one τῶν of the ἡμερῶν days καὶ - αὐτὸς he ἦν was διδάσκων, teaching, καὶ and ἦσαν were καθήμενοι sitting down Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees καὶ and νομοδιδάσκαλοι. teachers of the law (οἳ who ἦσαν had ἐληλυθότες come ἐκ from πάσης every κώμης village τῆς - Γαλιλαίας of Galilee καὶ and Ἰουδαίας, Judea καὶ and Ἰερουσαλήμ.) One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.

Luke 5:18

καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, ἄνδρες men φέροντες carrying ἐπὶ on κλίνης [a] pallet ἄνθρωπον [a] man ὃς who ἦν was παραλελυμένος. paralyzed καὶ and ἐζήτουν were seeking αὐτὸν him εἰσενεγκεῖν to carry in καὶ and θεῖναι to place ἐνώπιον before αὐτὸν him αὐτοῦ, him.

Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a sleeping mat. They tried to take him inside to Jesus,

Luke 5:19

καὶ and μὴ not εὑρόντες having found ποίας by what way εἰσενέγκωσιν they might carry αὐτὸν him διὰ because of τὸν the ὄχλον· crowd, ἀναβάντες having gone up ἐπὶ onto τὸ the δῶμα roof, διὰ through τῶν the κεράμων. tiles καθῆκαν they let down αὐτὸν him σὺν with τῷ the κλινιδίῳ, pallet εἰς into τὸ the μέσον midst ἔμπροσθεν in front of τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ. Jesus.

but they couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. So they went up to the roof and took off some tiles. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat down into the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

Luke 5:20

καὶ and ἰδὼν having seen τὴν the πίστιν faith αὐτῶν, of them εἶπεν, he said, ̓Άνθρωπε, man, ἀφέωνταί have been forgiven σοι you αἱ the ἁμαρτίαι sins σου. of you.

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, “Young man, your sins are forgiven.”

Luke 5:21

καὶ and οἱ the γραμματεῖς scribes καὶ and οἱ the Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees ἤρξαντο began διαλογίζεσθαι to reason λέγοντες, saying, Τίς who ἐστιν is οὗτος; this ὃς who λαλεῖ is speaking βλασφημίας. blasphemies? τίς who εἰ except μὴ μόνος alone δύναται is able ἁμαρτίας sins ἀφεῖναι to forgive - θεός; God?

But the Pharisees and teachers of religious law said to themselves, “Who does he think he is? That’s blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

Luke 5:22

ἐπιγνοὺς having known δὲ but - Ἰησοῦς Jesus τοὺς the διαλογισμοὺς thoughts αὐτῶν, of them, ἀποκριθεὶς having answered πρὸς to εἶπεν he said αὐτούς, them, Τί why διαλογίζεσθε are you reasoning ἐν in ταῖς the καρδίαις hearts ὑμῶν; of you?

Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?

Luke 5:23

τί which ἐστιν is εὐκοπώτερον, easier, εἰπεῖν, to say, Ἀφέωνταί have been forgiven σοι you αἱ the ἁμαρτίαι sins σου; of you, or εἰπεῖν, to say ̓Έγειρε get up καὶ and περιπάτει; walk?

Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’?

Luke 5:24

ἵνα in order that δὲ but εἰδῆτε you may know ὅτι that the υἱὸς Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου of Man ἐξουσίαν authority ἔχει has ἐπὶ on τῆς - γῆς earth ἀφιέναι to forgive ἁμαρτίας. sins εἶπεν he said τῷ to the one παραλελυμένῳ, having been paralyzed, Σοὶ to you λέγω, I say, ̓Έγειρε get up καὶ and ἄρας having picked up τὸ the κλινίδιόν pallet σου, of you πορεύου [and] go εἰς to τὸν the οἶκόν house σου. of you.

So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

Luke 5:25

καὶ and παραχρῆμα, at once ἀναστὰς having arisen ἐνώπιον in front of αὐτῶν, them, ἄρας having picked up [that] ἐφ᾽ upon which κατέκειτο, he was lying, ἀπῆλθεν he departed εἰς to τὸν the οἶκον house αὐτοῦ of him δοξάζων glorifying τὸν - θεόν. God.

And immediately, as everyone watched, the man jumped up, picked up his mat, and went home praising God.

Luke 5:26

καὶ and ἔκστασις terror ἔλαβεν seized ἅπαντας, everyone καὶ and ἐδόξαζον they were glorifying τὸν - θεόν, God καὶ and ἐπλήσθησαν they were filled φόβου with fear λέγοντες saying, ὅτι, - Εἴδαμεν we saw παράδοξα remarkable things σήμερον. today.

Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming, “We have seen amazing things today!”

Luke 5:27

καὶ and μετὰ after ταῦτα, these things ἐξῆλθεν, he went out καὶ and ἐθεάσατο saw τελώνην [a] tax collector ὀνόματι by name Λευεὶν Levi καθήμενον sitting ἐπὶ in τὸ the τελώνιον. tax office, καὶ and εἶπεν he said αὐτῷ, to him, Ἀκολούθει follow μοι. me.

Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him.

Luke 5:28

καὶ and καταλιπὼν having left behind πάντα, all things ἀναστάς, [and] having arisen ἠκολούθει he was following αὐτῷ. him.

So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.

Luke 5:29

καὶ and ἐποίησεν arranged δοχὴν banquet μεγάλην [a] great Λευεὶς Levi αὐτῷ for him ἐν in τῇ the οἰκίᾳ house αὐτοῦ. of him, καὶ and ἦν there was ὄχλος crowd πολὺς [a] great τελωνῶν of tax collectors καὶ and ἄλλων others οἳ who μετ᾽ with αὐτῶν them ἦσαν were κατακείμενοι. reclining.

Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.

Luke 5:30

καὶ and ἐγόγγυζον were murmuring οἱ the Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees καὶ and οἱ the γραμματεῖς scribes αὐτῶν of them πρὸς against τοὺς the μαθητὰς disciples αὐτοῦ of him λέγοντες, saying, Διὰ why τί μετὰ with τῶν the τελωνῶν tax collectors καὶ and ἁμαρτωλῶν sinners ἐσθίετε are you eating καὶ and πίνετε; drinking?

But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus' disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”

Luke 5:31

καὶ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered πρὸς to - Ἰησοῦς Jesus εἶπεν said αὐτούς, them, Οὐ no χρείαν need ἔχουσιν have οἱ the ones ὑγιαίνοντες being healthy ἰατροῦ— of [a] physician ἀλλὰ but οἱ the ones κακῶς ill[ness] ἔχοντες· having.

Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor sick people do.

Luke 5:32

οὐκ not ἐλήλυθα I have come καλέσαι to call δικαίους, [the] righteous ἀλλὰ but ἁμαρτωλοὺς sinners εἰς to μετάνοιαν. repentance.

I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

Luke 5:33

οἱ - δὲ but εἶπαν they said πρὸς to αὐτόν, him, Οἱ the μαθηταὶ disciples Ἰωάνου of John νηστεύουσιν fast πυκνὰ often καὶ and δεήσεις prayers ποιοῦνται, offer ὁμοίως likewise καὶ also οἱ the ones τῶν of the Φαρισαίων. Pharisees, οἱ the ones δὲ but σοὶ to you ἐσθίουσιν eat καὶ and πίνουσιν. drink.

One day some people said to Jesus, “John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?”

Luke 5:34

- δὲ but Ἰησοῦς Jesus εἶπεν said πρὸς to αὐτούς, them, Μὴ [surely] not δύνασθε you are able τοὺς the υἱοὺς sons (attendants) τοῦ for the νυμφῶνος bridegroom ἐν while - the νυμφίος bridegroom μετ᾽ with αὐτῶν them ἐστὶν is ποιῆσαι to make νηστεῦσαι; to fast [are you]?

Jesus responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not.

Luke 5:35

ἐλεύσονται will come ἡμέραι days, ὅταν when δὲ but καὶ also ἀπαρθῇ is taken away ἀπ᾽ from αὐτῶν them the νυμφίος, bridegroom, τότε then ἐν in ἐκείναις those ταῖς - ἡμέραις. days. νηστεύσουσιν they will fast

But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

Luke 5:36

ἔλεγεν he was telling πρὸς to δὲ now καὶ also παραβολὴν [a] parable αὐτοὺς them; ὅτι· - Οὐδεὶς no one ἐπίβλημα [a] patch ἀπὸ from ἱματίου garment καινοῦ [a] new σχίσας having torn ἐπιβάλλει puts [it] ἐπὶ on ἱμάτιον garment παλαιόν. an old. εἰ otherwise, δὲ μή γε καὶ both τὸ the καινὸν new σχίσει will tear καὶ and τῷ with the παλαιῷ, old οὐ not συμφωνήσει will match ἀπὸ from τὸ the ἐπίβλημα patch τὸ - τοῦ the καινοῦ. new.

Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.

Luke 5:37

καὶ and οὐδεὶς no one βάλλει puts οἶνον wine νέον new εἰς into ἀσκοὺς wineskins παλαιούς. old. εἰ otherwise, δὲ μή γε ῥήξει will burst the οἶνος wine - νέος new τοὺς the ἀσκούς· wineskins καὶ and αὐτὸς it ἐκχυθήσεται will be spilled καὶ and οἱ the ἀσκοὶ wineskins ἀπολοῦνται. will be destroyed.

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins.

Luke 5:38

ἀλλὰ rather, οἶνον wine νέον new εἰς into ἀσκοὺς wineskins καινοὺς new βλητέον. must be put.

New wine must be stored in new wineskins.

Luke 5:39

καὶ and οὐδεὶς no one πιὼν having drunk παλαιὸν [the] old θέλει desires νέον. [the] new. λέγει he says γάρ, for, the παλαιὸς old χρηστός good [enough] ἐστιν. is.

But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.”
