Luke 6:1
ἐγένετο it came about δὲ and ἐν on σαββάτῳ [the] Sabbath διαπορεύεσθαι is passing αὐτὸν [that] he διὰ through σπορίμων, grain fields, καὶ and ἔτιλλον were picking οἱ the μαθηταὶ disciples αὐτοῦ, of him καὶ and ἤσθιον eating τοὺς the στάχυας, heads of grain ψώχοντες [and] rubbing [them] ταῖς in the[ir] χερσίν. hands.
One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain.
Luke 6:2
τινὲς some δὲ now τῶν of the Φαρισαίων Pharisees εἶπαν, said, Τί why ποιεῖτε are you doing οὐκ not ἔξεστιν is permissible ὃ what τοῖς on the σάββασιν; Sabbath?
But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
Luke 6:3
καὶ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered πρὸς to αὐτοὺς them εἶπεν said ὁ - Ἰησοῦς, Jesus, Οὐδὲ and not τοῦτο this ἀνέγνωτε have you read ὃ what ἐποίησεν did Δαυεὶδ David ὅτε when ἐπείνασεν was hungry αὐτὸς he καὶ and οἱ the ones μετ᾽ with αὐτοῦ; him?
Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
Luke 6:4
ὡς how εἰσῆλθεν he entered εἰς into τὸν the οἶκον house τοῦ - θεοῦ of God καὶ and τοὺς the ἄρτους loaves τῆς of the προθέσεως presentation λαβὼν having taken ἔφαγεν. he ate καὶ and ἔδωκεν gave τοῖς to the ones μετ᾽ with αὐτοῦ, him, οὓς which οὐκ not ἔξεστιν is permissible φαγεῖν to eat εἰ except μὴ μόνους only τοὺς the ἱερεῖς. priests?
He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
Luke 6:5
καὶ and ἔλεγεν he was saying αὐτοῖς, to them, Κύριός Lord ἐστιν is τοῦ of the σαββάτου Sabbath ὁ the υἱὸς Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου. of Man.
And Jesus added, “The Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath.”
Luke 6:6
ἐγένετο it came about δὲ and ἐν on ἑτέρῳ another σαββάτῳ, Sabbath εἰσελθεῖν entered αὐτὸν [that] he εἰς into τὴν the συναγωγὴν synagogue καὶ and διδάσκειν, taught. καὶ and ἦν there was ἄνθρωπος [a] man ἐκεῖ there καὶ also ἡ the χεὶρ hand αὐτοῦ of him ἡ the δεξιὰ right [one] ἦν was ξηρά. withered.
On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching.
Luke 6:7

The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
Luke 6:8
αὐτὸς he δὲ but ᾔδει knew τοὺς the διαλογισμοὺς thoughts αὐτῶν. of them, εἶπεν said δὲ and τῷ to the ἀνδρὶ man τῷ - ξηρὰν withered ἔχοντι having τὴν the χεῖρα, hand, ̓Έγειρε rise καὶ and στῆθι stand εἰς in τὸ the μέσον· midst. καὶ and ἀναστὰς having arisen ἔστη. he stood.
But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” So the man came forward.
Luke 6:9
εἶπεν said δὲ and ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus πρὸς to αὐτούς, them, Ἐπερωτῶ I ask ὑμᾶς. you εἰ whether ἔξεστιν it is permissible τῷ on the σαββάτῳ Sabbath ἀγαθοποιῆσαι, to do good ἢ or κακοποιῆσαι; to do evil, ψυχὴν life σῶσαι to save ἢ or ἀπολέσαι; destroy [it]?
Then Jesus said to his critics, “I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?”
Luke 6:10
καὶ and περιβλεψάμενος having looked around [at] πάντας all αὐτοὺς of them εἶπεν he said αὐτῷ, to him, ̓Έκτεινον stretch out τὴν the χεῖρά hand σου. of you. ὁ - δὲ and ἐποίησεν, he did, καὶ and ἀπεκατεστάθη was restored ἡ the χεὶρ hand αὐτοῦ. of him.
He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!
Luke 6:11
αὐτοὶ they δέ, but ἐπλήσθησαν were filled ἀνοίας with fury καὶ and διελάλουν they were discussing πρὸς with ἀλλήλους one another τί what ἂν would ποιήσαιεν they do τῷ - Ἰησοῦ. to Jesus.
At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him.
Luke 6:12
ἐγένετο it came about δὲ now ἐν in ταύταις these ταῖς - ἡμέραις days ἐξελθεῖν went forth αὐτὸν [that] he εἰς to τὸ the ὄρος mountain προσεύξασθαι, to pray, καὶ and ἦν he was ἐν in τῇ - προσευχῇ prayer διανυκτερεύων spending [the] whole night τοῦ - θεοῦ. to God.
One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night.
Luke 6:13
καὶ and ὅτε when ἐγένετο came ἡμέρα day, προσεφώνησεν he summoned τοὺς the μαθητὰς disciples αὐτοῦ of him, καὶ and ἐκλεξάμενος having chosen ἀπ᾽ from αὐτῶν them δώδεκα twelve, οὓς whom καὶ also ἀποστόλους. apostles ὠνόμασεν· he named,

Luke 6:16

Judas (son of James), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).
Luke 6:17
καὶ and καταβὰς having come down μετ᾽ with αὐτῶν them ἔστη he stood ἐπὶ on τόπου place πεδινοῦ, [a] level, καὶ and ὄχλος crowd πολὺς [a] great μαθητῶν of disciples αὐτοῦ of him, καὶ and πλῆθος multitude πολὺ [a] great τοῦ of the λαοῦ· people ἀπὸ from πάσης all τῆς - Ἰουδαίας Judea καὶ and Ἰερουσαλὴμ Jerusalem καὶ and τῆς the παραλίου coastal region Τύρου of Tyre καὶ and Σιδῶνος. When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood with Jesus on a large, level area, surrounded by many of his followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon.
Luke 6:18
οἳ who ἦλθαν came ἀκοῦσαι to hear αὐτοῦ him καὶ and ἰαθῆναι to be healed ἀπὸ from τῶν the νόσων diseases αὐτῶν· of them. καὶ and οἱ the ones ἐνοχλούμενοι being troubled ἀπὸ by πνευμάτων spirits ἀκαθάρτων unclean ἐθεραπεύοντο. were being healed,
They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those troubled by evil spirits were healed.
Luke 6:19
καὶ and πᾶς all ὁ the ὄχλος crowd ἐζήτουν were seeking ἅπτεσθαι to touch αὐτοῦ, him, ὅτι because δύναμις power παρ᾽ from αὐτοῦ him ἐξήρχετο, was going out καὶ and ἰᾶτο he was healing πάντας. all [of them].
Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone.
Luke 6:20
καὶ and αὐτὸς he ἐπάρας having lifted up τοὺς the ὀφθαλμοὺς eyes αὐτοῦ of him εἰς to τοὺς the μαθητὰς disciples αὐτοῦ of him ἔλεγεν, was saying, Μακάριοι blessed [are] οἱ the πτωχοί, poor ones, ὅτι for ὑμετέρα yours ἐστὶν is ἡ the βασιλεία Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ. of God.
Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.
Luke 6:21
μακάριοι blessed [are] οἱ the ones πεινῶντες hungering νῦν, now, ὅτι for χορτασθήσεσθε. you will eat your fill. μακάριοι blessed [are] οἱ the ones κλαίοντες weeping νῦν, now, ὅτι for γελάσετε. you will laugh.
God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.
Luke 6:22
μακάριοί blessed ἐστε are you ὅταν when μισήσωσιν hate ὑμᾶς you οἱ - ἄνθρωποι men καὶ and ὅταν when ἀφορίσωσιν they ostracize ὑμᾶς you καὶ and ὀνειδίσωσιν they reproach [you] καὶ and ἐκβάλωσιν cast out τὸ the ὄνομα name ὑμῶν of you ὡς as πονηρὸν evil ἕνεκα because τοῦ of the υἱοῦ Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου. of Man.
What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.
Luke 6:23
χάρητε, rejoice ἐν in ἐκείνῃ that τῇ - ἡμέρᾳ. day καὶ and σκιρτήσατε. leap [for joy], ἰδοὺ look, γὰρ for ὁ the μισθὸς reward ὑμῶν of you πολὺς [is] great ἐν in τῷ - οὐρανῷ. heaven. κατὰ according to τὰ the αὐτὰ same [things] γὰρ for ἐποίουν were doing τοῖς to the προφήταις prophets οἱ the πατέρες fathers αὐτῶν. of them.
When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way.
Luke 6:24

“What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.
Luke 6:25

What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.
Luke 6:26
οὐαὶ woe ὅταν when καλῶς well εἴπωσιν speak ὑμᾶς of you πάντες all οἱ - ἄνθρωποι, men. κατὰ according τὰ to the αὐτὰ same [things] ἐποίουν were doing γὰρ for τοῖς to the ψευδοπροφήταις false prophets οἱ the πατέρες fathers αὐτῶν. of them.
What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets.
Luke 6:27

Luke 6:28

Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.
Luke 6:29

If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.
Luke 6:30

Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back.
Luke 6:31

Do to others as you would like them to do to you.
Luke 6:32
καὶ and εἰ if ἀγαπᾶτε you love τοὺς the ones ἀγαπῶντας loving ὑμᾶς, you, ποία what kind of ὑμῖν to you χάρις credit ἐστίν; is [that]? καὶ even γὰρ for οἱ the ἁμαρτωλοὶ sinners τοὺς the ones ἀγαπῶντας loving αὐτοὺς them ἀγαπῶσιν. love.
“If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them!
Luke 6:33
καὶ even γὰρ for ἐὰν if ἀγαθοποιῆτε you do good τοὺς to the ones ἀγαθοποιοῦντας doing good ὑμᾶς, to you, ποία what kind of ὑμῖν to you χάρις credit ἐστίν; is [that]? καὶ even οἱ - ἁμαρτωλοὶ sinners τὸ the αὐτὸ same ποιοῦσιν. do.
And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!
Luke 6:34
καὶ and ἐὰν if δανίσητε you lend παρ᾽ from ὧν whom ἐλπίζετε you hope λαβεῖν, to receive, ποία what kind of ὑμῖν to you χάρις credit ἐστίν; is [that]? καὶ even ἁμαρτωλοὶ sinners ἁμαρτωλοῖς to sinners δανίζουσιν lend ἵνα that ἀπολάβωσιν they may receive in return τὰ the ἴσα. same amount.
And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return.
Luke 6:35

Luke 6:36

Luke 6:37

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.
Luke 6:38
δίδοτε, give, καὶ and δοθήσεται it will be given ὑμῖν· to you. μέτρον measure καλὸν [a] good πεπιεσμένον, having been pressed down σεσαλευμένον, [and] having been shaken, ὑπερεκχυννόμενον, overflowing δώσουσιν will be put εἰς into τὸν the κόλπον lap ὑμῶν. of you. ᾧ by what γὰρ for μέτρῳ measure μετρεῖτε you measure ἀντιμετρηθήσεται it will be measured in return ὑμῖν. to you.

Luke 6:39
εἶπεν he told δὲ now καὶ also παραβολὴν [a] parable αὐτοῖς· to them. Μήτι [surely] not δύναται is-able τυφλὸς [a] blind one τυφλὸν [a] blind one ὁδηγεῖν; to lead? οὐχὶ not ἀμφότεροι both εἰς into βόθυνον [a] pit ἐμπεσοῦνται; will fall in?
Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?
Luke 6:40
οὐκ not ἔστιν is μαθητὴς [a] disciple ὑπὲρ above τὸν the διδάσκαλον· teacher. κατηρτισμένος having been fully trained δὲ but πᾶς every [one] ἔσται will be ὡς like ὁ the διδάσκαλος teacher αὐτοῦ. of him.
Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
Luke 6:41
τί why δὲ and βλέπεις do you see τὸ the κάρφος speck τὸ - ἐν in τῷ the ὀφθαλμῷ eye τοῦ of the ἀδελφοῦ brother σου, of you, τὴν the δὲ but δοκὸν beam of wood τὴν - ἐν in τῷ the (your) ἰδίῳ own ὀφθαλμῷ eye οὐ not κατανοεῖς; you do notice?
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?
Luke 6:42
πῶς how δύνασαι are you able λέγειν to say τῷ to the ἀδελφῷ brother σου, of you, Ἀδελφέ, brother, ἄφες let me [that] ἐκβάλω I may remove τὸ the κάρφος speck τὸ - ἐν in τῷ the ὀφθαλμῷ eye σου, of you, αὐτὸς [while] yourself τὴν - ἐν in τῷ the ὀφθαλμῷ eye σοῦ of you, δοκὸν [the] beam of wood οὐ not βλέπων; seeing? ὑποκριτά, hypocrite, ἔκβαλε remove πρῶτον first τὴν the δοκὸν beam of wood ἐκ from τοῦ the ὀφθαλμοῦ eye σοῦ· of you, καὶ and τότε then διαβλέψεις you will see clearly τὸ the κάρφος speck τὸ - ἐν in τῷ the ὀφθαλμῷ eye τοῦ of the ἀδελφοῦ brother σου of you ἐκβαλεῖν. to take out.
How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Luke 6:43
οὐ no γὰρ for ἔστιν there is δένδρον tree καλὸν good ποιοῦν producing καρπὸν fruit σαπρόν, bad, οὐδὲ nor πάλιν again δένδρον tree σαπρὸν [a] bad ποιοῦν producing καρπὸν fruit καλόν. good.
“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit.
Luke 6:44
ἕκαστον each γὰρ for δένδρον tree ἐκ by τοῦ the (its) ἰδίου own καρποῦ fruit γινώσκεται. will be known. οὐ not γὰρ for ἐξ from ἀκανθῶν thorns συλλέγουσιν do they gather σῦκα, figs οὐδὲ nor ἐκ from βάτου [a] thorn-bush σταφυλὴν [a] bunch of grapes τρυγῶσιν. do they harvest.
A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes.
Luke 6:45
ὁ the ἀγαθὸς good ἄνθρωπος man ἐκ from τοῦ the ἀγαθοῦ good θησαυροῦ storehouse τῆς of the καρδίας heart προφέρει produces τὸ - ἀγαθόν, good, καὶ and ὁ the πονηρὸς evil ἐκ from τοῦ - πονηροῦ evil προφέρει produces τὸ - πονηρόν. evil. ἐκ from γὰρ for περισσεύματος [the] abundance καρδίας of [the] heart λαλεῖ speaks τὸ the στόμα mouth αὐτοῦ. of him.
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.
Luke 6:46
τί why δέ and με me καλεῖτε, do you call, Κύριε, Lord, κύριε. Lord, καὶ and [yet] οὐ not ποιεῖτε you do do ἃ what λέγω; I say?
“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?
Luke 6:47

Luke 6:48

It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.
Luke 6:49

But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”
