Luke 7:1
ἐπειδὴ when ἐπλήρωσεν he finished πάντα all τὰ the ῥήματα words αὐτοῦ of him εἰς in τὰς the ἀκοὰς ears τοῦ of the λαοῦ, people, εἰσῆλθεν he entered εἰς into Καφαρναούμ. Capernaum.
When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.
Luke 7:2
ἑκατοντάρχου of [a] centurion δέ now τινος a certain δοῦλος slave κακῶς an ill[ness] ἔχων having ἤμελλεν was about τελευτᾶν to die, ὃς who ἦν was αὐτῷ by him ἔντιμος. highly regarded.
At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.
Luke 7:3
ἀκούσας having heard δὲ and περὶ about τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ, Jesus, ἀπέστειλεν he sent πρὸς to αὐτὸν him πρεσβυτέρους elders τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews ἐρωτῶν asking αὐτὸν him ὅπως that ἐλθὼν having come διασώσῃ he might cure τὸν the δοῦλον slave αὐτοῦ. of him.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.
Luke 7:4
οἱ the ones παραγενόμενοι having come πρὸς to δὲ and τὸν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus παρεκάλουν were begging αὐτὸν him σπουδαίως. earnestly λέγοντες saying ὅτι, - ̓Άξιός worthy ἐστιν he is ᾧ for whom παρέξῃ you will grant τοῦτο, this.
So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,
Luke 7:5
ἀγαπᾷ he loves γὰρ for τὸ the ἔθνος nation ἡμῶν of us καὶ and τὴν the συναγωγὴν synagogue αὐτὸς he ᾠκοδόμησεν built ἡμῖν. for us.
“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”
Luke 7:6

Luke 7:7
διὸ therefore οὐδὲ not ἐμαυτὸν myself ἠξίωσα I considered worthy πρὸς to σὲ you ἐλθεῖν. to come. ἀλλὰ but εἰπὲ say λόγῳ, [the] word, καὶ and ἰαθήτω let be healed ὁ the παῖς servant μου. of me.
I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.
Luke 7:8

I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
Luke 7:9
ἀκούσας having heard δὲ and ταῦτα these things, ὁ - Ἰησοῦς, Jesus ἐθαύμασεν was amazed [at] αὐτόν. him καὶ and στραφεὶς having turned τῷ to the ἀκολουθοῦντι following αὐτῷ him ὄχλῳ, crowd εἶπεν, he said, Λέγω I say ὑμῖν, to you, οὐδὲ not even ἐν in τῷ - Ἰσραὴλ Israel τοσαύτην such great πίστιν faith εὗρον. have I found.
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”
Luke 7:10
καὶ and ὑποστρέψαντες having returned εἰς to τὸν the οἶκον house οἱ the ones πεμφθέντες, having been sent εὗρον found τὸν the δοῦλον slave ὑγιαίνοντα. being in good health.
And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.
Luke 7:11
καὶ and ἐγένετο it came about ἐν on τῷ the ἑξῆς next [day] ἐπορεύθη [that] he proceeded εἰς to πόλιν [a] city καλουμένην being called Ναΐν, Nain καὶ and συνεπορεύοντο were traveling along αὐτῷ with him οἱ the μαθηταὶ disciples αὐτοῦ of him καὶ and ὄχλος crowd πολύς. [a] great.
Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.
Luke 7:12
ὡς as δὲ now ἤγγισεν he approached τῇ the πύλῃ gate τῆς of the πόλεως. city, καὶ - ἰδοὺ look, ἐξεκομίζετο was being carried out τεθνηκὼς having died μονογενὴς [the] only υἱὸς son τῇ to the μητρὶ mother αὐτοῦ of him καὶ and αὐτὴ she ἦν was χήρα, [a] widow. καὶ and ὄχλος crowd τῆς of the πόλεως city ἱκανὸς [a] considerable ἦν was σὺν with αὐτῇ. her.
A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.
Luke 7:13
καὶ and ἰδὼν having seen αὐτήν, her, ὁ the κύριος Lord ἐσπλαγχνίσθη had compassion ἐπ᾽ upon αὐτῇ. her καὶ and εἶπεν said αὐτῇ, to her, Μὴ not κλαῖε. do cry.
When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.
Luke 7:14
καὶ and προσελθὼν having approached ἥψατο he touched τῆς the σοροῦ, coffin, οἱ the ones δὲ and βαστάζοντες carrying [the coffin] ἔστησαν. stood [still], καὶ and εἶπεν, he said, Νεανίσκε, young man, σοὶ to you λέγω, I say, ἐγέρθητι. get up.
Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”
Luke 7:15
καὶ and ἀνεκάθισεν sat up ὁ the νεκρὸς dead man καὶ and ἤρξατο he began λαλεῖν. to speak, καὶ and ἔδωκεν he gave αὐτὸν him τῇ to the μητρὶ mother αὐτοῦ. of him.
Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
Luke 7:16
ἔλαβεν seized δὲ and φόβος fear πάντας, everyone καὶ and ἐδόξαζον they were glorifying τὸν - θεόν, God λέγοντες saying, ὅτι, - Προφήτης prophet μέγας [a] great ἠγέρθη was raised up ἐν among ἡμῖν, us καὶ and ὅτι, - Ἐπεσκέψατο visited ὁ - θεὸς God τὸν the λαὸν people αὐτοῦ. of him.
Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”
Luke 7:17
καὶ and ἐξῆλθεν went out ὁ - λόγος report οὗτος this ἐν in ὅλῃ all τῇ - Ἰουδαίᾳ Judea περὶ about αὐτοῦ him καὶ and πάσῃ in all τῇ the περιχώρῳ. surrounding countryside.
And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.
Luke 7:18
καὶ and ἀπήγγειλαν reported Ἰωάνῃ to John οἱ the μαθηταὶ disciples αὐτοῦ of him περὶ about πάντων all τούτων. these things, καὶ and προσκαλεσάμενος having summoned δύο two τινὰς a certain τῶν of the μαθητῶν disciples αὐτοῦ of him, ὁ - Ἰωάνης, John
The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,
Luke 7:19
ἔπεμψεν sent πρὸς to τὸν the κύριον Lord λέγων, saying, Σὺ you εἶ are ὁ the one ἐρχόμενος, coming ἢ or ἕτερον for another προσδοκῶμεν; should we be looking?
and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”
Luke 7:20
παραγενόμενοι having come δὲ and πρὸς to αὐτὸν him οἱ the ἄνδρες men εἶπαν, said, Ἰωάνης John ὁ the Βαπτιστὴς Baptist ἀπέστειλεν sent ἡμᾶς us πρὸς to σὲ you λέγων, saying Σὺ you εἶ are ὁ the one ἐρχόμενος, coming ἢ or ἄλλον for another προσδοκῶμεν; should we be looking?
John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”
Luke 7:21
ἐν in ἐκείνῃ that τῇ - ὥρᾳ, hour ἐθεράπευσεν he healed πολλοὺς many ἀπὸ of νόσων diseases καὶ and μαστίγων, afflictions καὶ and πνευμάτων spirits πονηρῶν evil καὶ and τυφλοῖς blind one πολλοῖς to many ἐχαρίσατο he granted βλέπειν. to see.
At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.
Luke 7:22
καὶ and ἀποκριθεὶς having answered εἶπεν he said αὐτοῖς, to them, Πορευθέντες having gone ἀπαγγείλατε report Ἰωάνῃ to John ἃ what εἴδετε you saw καὶ and ἠκούσατε— heard. τυφλοὶ blind ones ἀναβλέπουσιν, receive sight, χωλοὶ lame ones περιπατοῦσιν, walk, λεπροὶ lepers καθαρίζονται, are cleansed καὶ and κωφοὶ deaf ones ἀκούουσιν, hear, νεκροὶ [the] dead ἐγείρονται, are raised, πτωχοὶ poor ones εὐαγγελίζονται. have the good news preached [to them].
Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard — the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”
Luke 7:23
καὶ and μακάριός blessed ἐστιν is ὃς who ἐὰν ever μὴ not σκανδαλισθῇ does take offense ἐν at ἐμοί. me.
And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.”
Luke 7:24
ἀπελθόντων [as] were departing δὲ and τῶν the ἀγγέλων messengers Ἰωάνου, of John, ἤρξατο he began λέγειν to say πρὸς to τοὺς the ὄχλους crowds περὶ about Ἰωάνου· John, Τί what ἐξήλθατε did you go out εἰς into τὴν the ἔρημον desert θεάσασθαι; to see? κάλαμον [a] reed ὑπὸ by ἀνέμου [the] wind σαλευόμενον; being shaken?
After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?
Luke 7:25
ἀλλὰ but τί what ἐξήλθατε did you go out ἰδεῖν; to see? ἄνθρωπον [a] man ἐν in μαλακοῖς soft ἱματίοις clothing ἠμφιεσμένον; having been dressed? ἰδού, look, οἱ the ones ἐν with ἱματισμῷ apparel ἐνδόξῳ glorious καὶ and τρυφῇ in luxury ὑπάρχοντες living ἐν in τοῖς the βασιλείοις [royal] palaces εἰσίν. are.
Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.
Luke 7:26
ἀλλὰ but τί what ἐξήλθατε did you go out ἰδεῖν to see? προφήτην; [a] prophet? ναί, yes, λέγω I say ὑμῖν to you, καὶ and περισσότερον more than προφήτου. [a] prophet.
Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.
Luke 7:27
οὗτός this one ἐστιν is he περὶ about οὗ whom γέγραπται, it has been written, Ἰδού, look, ἀποστέλλω I send τὸν the ἄγγελόν messenger μου of me πρὸ before προσώπου face σου, your, ὃς who κατασκευάσει will prepare τὴν the ὁδόν way σου of you ἔμπροσθέν in front of σου. you.
John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’
Luke 7:28
λέγω I say ὑμῖν, to you, μείζων greater than ἐν among γεννητοῖς [those] born γυναικῶν, of women Ἰωάνου John οὐδεὶς no one ἔστιν. is. ὁ the one δὲ but μικρότερος of least importance ἐν in τῇ the βασιλείᾳ Kingdom τοῦ - θεοῦ of God μείζων greater than αὐτοῦ him ἐστίν. is.
I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”
Luke 7:29
καὶ and πᾶς all ὁ the λαός people ἀκούσας— having listened καὶ and οἱ the τελῶναι— tax collectors ἐδικαίωσαν justified τὸν - θεόν, God, βαπτισθέντες having been baptized [with] τὸ the βάπτισμα baptism Ἰωάνου. of John.
When they heard this, all the people — even the tax collectors — agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John.
Luke 7:30
οἱ the δὲ but Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees καὶ and οἱ the νομικοὶ teachers of the law τὴν the βουλὴν purpose τοῦ - θεοῦ of God ἠθέτησαν they set aside εἰς for ἑαυτούς, themselves μὴ not βαπτισθέντες having been baptized ὑπ᾽ by αὐτοῦ. him.
But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.
Luke 7:31
τίνι to what οὖν therefore ὁμοιώσω will I compare τοὺς the ἀνθρώπους men τῆς - γενεᾶς generation ταύτης; of this καὶ and τίνι to what εἰσὶν are they ὅμοιοι; like?
“To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?
Luke 7:32
ὅμοιοί like εἰσιν they are παιδίοις children τοῖς - ἐν in ἀγορᾷ [the] marketplace καθημένοις. sitting καὶ and προσφωνοῦσιν calling out ἀλλήλοις to one another ἃ who λέγει, says, Ηὐλήσαμεν we played [the] flute ὑμῖν, for you καὶ and οὐκ not ὠρχήσασθε, you did dance, ἐθρηνήσαμεν, we sang [a] dirge καὶ and οὐκ not ἐκλαύσατε. you did weep.
They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’
Luke 7:33
ἐλήλυθεν has come γὰρ for Ἰωάνης John ὁ the Βαπτιστὴς Baptist μὴ not ἔσθων eating ἄρτον bread μήτε nor πίνων drinking οἶνον, wine, καὶ and λέγετε, you say, Δαιμόνιον [a] demon ἔχει. he has.
For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’
Luke 7:34
ἐλήλυθεν has come ὁ the υἱὸς Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου of Man ἔσθων eating καὶ and πίνων, drinking, καὶ and λέγετε, you say, Ἰδοὺ look, ἄνθρωπος [a] man [who is] φάγος [a] glutton καὶ and οἰνοπότης, [a] drunkard, φίλος [a] friend τελωνῶν of tax collectors καὶ and ἁμαρτωλῶν. sinners.
The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’
Luke 7:35
καὶ and ἐδικαιώθη was (is) justified ἡ - σοφία wisdom ἀπὸ by πάντων all τῶν of the τέκνων children αὐτῆς. of her.
But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it.”
Luke 7:36

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.
Luke 7:37
καὶ and ἰδοὺ look, γυνὴ [a] woman ἥτις who ἦν was ἐν in τῇ the πόλει city ἁμαρτωλὸς sinful, καὶ and ἐπιγνοῦσα having known ὅτι that κατάκειται he reclines at table ἐν in τῇ the οἰκίᾳ house τοῦ of the Φαρισαίου, Pharisee, κομίσασα having brought ἀλάβαστρον an alabaster [flask] μύρου of perfume
When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.
Luke 7:38
καὶ and στᾶσα having stood ὀπίσω behind παρὰ at τοὺς the πόδας feet αὐτοῦ, of him κλαίουσα· crying, τοῖς with the δάκρυσιν tears ἤρξατο she began βρέχειν to wet τοὺς the πόδας feet αὐτοῦ. of him καὶ and ταῖς with the θριξὶν hair τῆς of the κεφαλῆς head αὐτῆς of her ἐξέμασσεν. she was wiping off καὶ and κατεφίλει was kissing τοὺς the πόδας feet αὐτοῦ of him καὶ and ἤλειφεν was anointing (them) τῷ with the μύρῳ. perfume.
Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
Luke 7:39
ἰδὼν having seen [this] δὲ but ὁ the Φαρισαῖος Pharisee ὁ - καλέσας having invited αὐτόν, him εἶπεν spoke ἐν within ἑαυτῷ himself λέγων, saying, Οὗτος this one εἰ if ἦν was προφήτης, [a] prophet, ἐγίνωσκεν he have known ἂν would τίς who καὶ and ποταπὴ what sort of ἡ - γυνὴ woman ἥτις who ἅπτεται is touching αὐτοῦ· him, ὅτι because ἁμαρτωλός sinful ἐστιν. she is.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”
Luke 7:40
καὶ having answered ἀποκριθεὶς and ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus εἶπεν said πρὸς to αὐτόν· him, Σίμων, Simon, ἔχω I have σοί to you τι something εἰπεῖν. to say. ὁ he δέ, and, Διδάσκαλε, teacher, εἰπέ· speak, φησίν. he says.
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.
Luke 7:41
δύο two [persons] χρεοφειλέται debtors ἦσαν were δανιστῇ creditor τινί— to a certain; ὁ the εἷς one ὤφειλεν was owing δηνάρια denarii πεντακόσια five hundred, ὁ the δὲ and ἕτερος other πεντήκοντα. fifty.
Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people — 500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other.
Luke 7:42
μὴ not ἐχόντων having ἀποδοῦναι to pay, αὐτῶν, of themselves ἀμφοτέροις both ἐχαρίσατο. he forgave. τίς which αὐτῶν of them οὖν therefore πλεῖον more ἀγαπήσει will love αὐτόν; him?
But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”
Luke 7:43
ἀποκριθεὶς having answered Σίμων Simon εἶπεν, said, Ὑπολαμβάνω I suppose ὅτι - ᾧ to whom τὸ the πλεῖον more ἐχαρίσατο. he forgave. ὁ - δὲ and εἶπεν he said αὐτῷ, to him, Ὀρθῶς correctly ἔκρινας. you judged.
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said.
Luke 7:44
καὶ and στραφεὶς having turned πρὸς to τὴν the γυναῖκα woman τῷ - Σίμωνι to Simon ἔφη, he said, Βλέπεις do you see ταύτην this τὴν - γυναῖκα. woman? εἰσῆλθόν I entered σου your εἰς into τὴν - οἰκίαν, house, ὕδωρ water μοι for me ἐπὶ on [my] πόδας feet οὐκ not ἔδωκας, you did give. αὕτη she δὲ but τοῖς with the (her) δάκρυσιν tears ἔβρεξέν wet μου my τοὺς - πόδας feet καὶ and ταῖς with the θριξὶν hair αὐτῆς of her ἐξέμαξεν. wiped [them] off.
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
Luke 7:45
φίλημά [a] kiss μοι to me οὐκ not ἔδωκας, you did give. αὕτη she δὲ but, ἀφ᾽ from ἧς [the time] which εἰσῆλθον, I entered οὐ not διέλιπεν did stop καταφιλοῦσά kissing μου my τοὺς - πόδας. feet.
You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.
Luke 7:46
ἐλαίῳ with oil τὴν the κεφαλήν head μου of me οὐκ not ἤλειψας, you did anoint. αὕτη she δὲ but μύρῳ with perfume ἤλειψεν anointed τοὺς the πόδας feet μου. of me.
You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.
Luke 7:47
οὗ this χάριν for reason λέγω I say σοι, to you, ἀφέωνται have been forgiven αἱ the ἁμαρτίαι sins αὐτῆς— of her [which are] αἱ - πολλαί— many, ὅτι for ἠγάπησεν she loved πολύ. greatly. ᾧ to whom δὲ but ὀλίγον little ἀφίεται is forgiven, ὀλίγον little ἀγαπᾷ. he loves.
“I tell you, her sins — and they are many — have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”
Luke 7:48
εἶπεν he said δὲ and αὐτῇ, to her, Ἀφέωνταί have been forgiven σου your αἱ - ἁμαρτίαι. sins.
Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
Luke 7:49
καὶ and ἤρξαντο began λέγειν to say οἱ the ones συνανακείμενοι reclining at table with [him] ἐν among ἑαυτοῖς, themselves. Τίς who οὗτός this ἐστιν, is ὃς who καὶ even ἁμαρτίας sins ἀφίησιν; forgives?
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”
