Matt. 1:1-25

Matt. 1:1

Βίβλος [a] record γενέσεως of [the] genealogy Ἰησοῦ of Jesus Χριστοῦ, Christ υἱοῦ son Δαυεὶδ of David υἱοῦ son Ἀβραάμ· of Abraham.

This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham:

Matt. 1:2

Ἀβραὰμ Abraham ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰσαάκ. Isaac, Ἰσαὰκ Isaac δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰακώβ. Jacob, Ἰακὼβ Jacob δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰούδαν Judah καὶ and τοὺς the ἀδελφοὺς brothers αὐτοῦ. of him,

Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.

Matt. 1:3

Ἰούδας Judah δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Φαρὲς Perez καὶ and τὸν - Ζαρά Zerah (ἐκ by τῆς - Θάμαρ). Tamar, Φαρὲς Perez δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἑσρώμ. Hezron, Ἑσρὼμ Hezron δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀράμ. Aram,

Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar). Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram.

Matt. 1:4

Ἀρὰμ Aram δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀμιναδάβ. Amminadab, Ἀμιναδὰβ Amminadab δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ναασσών. Nahshon, Ναασσὼν Nahshon δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Σαλμών. Salmon,

Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon.

Matt. 1:5

Σαλμὼν Salmon δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Βοές Boaz (ἐκ by τῆς - Ῥαχάβ). Rahab, Βοὲς Boaz δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰωβήδ Obed (ἐκ by τῆς - Ῥούθ). Ruth, Ἰωβὴδ Obed δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰεσσαί. Jesse,

Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab). Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth). Obed was the father of Jesse.

Matt. 1:6

Ἰεσσαὶ Jesse δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Δαυεὶδ David τὸν the βασιλέα. King. Δαυεὶδ David δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Σολομῶνα Solomon (ἐκ by τῆς the [wife] τοῦ - Οὐρίου). of Uriah,

Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah).

Matt. 1:7

Σολομὼν Solomon δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ῥοβοάμ. Rehoboam, Ῥοβοὰμ Rehoboam δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀβιά. Abijah, Ἀβιὰ Abijah δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀσάφ. Asaph,

Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. Abijah was the father of Asa.

Matt. 1:8

Ἀσὰφ Asaph δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰωσαφάτ. Jehoshaphat, Ἰωσαφὰτ Jehoshaphat δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰωράμ. Joram, Ἰωρὰμ Joram δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ὀζείαν. Uzziah,

Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram. Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.

Matt. 1:9

Ὀζείας Uzziah δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰωαθάμ. Jotham, Ἰωαθὰμ Jotham δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - ̓Άχας. Ahaz, ̓Άχας Ahaz δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἑζεκίαν. Hezekiah,

Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.

Matt. 1:10

Ἑζεκίας Hezekiah δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Μανασσῆ. Manasseh. Μανασσῆς Manasseh δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀμώς. Amos, Ἀμὼς Amos δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰωσείαν. Josiah,

Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah.

Matt. 1:11

Ἰωσείας Josiah δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰεχονίαν Jeconiah καὶ and τοὺς the ἀδελφοὺς brothers αὐτοῦ of him (ἐπὶ at τῆς the μετοικεσίας deportation Βαβυλῶνος). to Babylon.

Josiah was the father of Jehoiachin and his brothers (born at the time of the exile to Babylon).

Matt. 1:12

μετὰ after δὲ and τὴν the μετοικεσίαν deportation Βαβυλῶνος· to Babylon, Ἰεχονίας Jeconiah ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Σαλαθιήλ. Shealtiel, Σαλαθιὴλ Shealtiel δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ζοροβάβελ. Zerubbabel,

After the Babylonian exile: Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.

Matt. 1:13

Ζοροβάβελ Zerubbabel δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀβιούδ. Abiud, Ἀβιοὺδ Abiud δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἐλιακείμ. Eliakim, Ἐλιακεὶμ Eliakim δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀζώρ. Azor,

Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor.

Matt. 1:14

Ἀζὼρ Azor δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Σαδώκ. Zadok, Σαδὼκ Zadok δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἀχείμ. Achim, Ἀχεὶμ Achim δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἐλιούδ. Eliud,

Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim. Akim was the father of Eliud.

Matt. 1:15

Ἐλιοὺδ Eliud δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἐλεάζαρ. Eleazar, Ἐλεάζαρ Eleazar δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Μαθθάν. Matthan, Μαθθὰν Matthan δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰακώβ. Jacob,

Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob.

Matt. 1:16

Ἰακὼβ Jacob δὲ and ἐγέννησεν fathered τὸν - Ἰωσήφ, Joseph, τὸν the ἄνδρα husband Μαρίας. of Mary, ἐξ from ἐγεννήθη was born ἧς whom Ἰησοῦς, Jesus the one λεγόμενος being called Χριστός. Christ.

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.

Matt. 1:17

πᾶσαι all οὖν thus αἱ the γενεαὶ generations ἀπὸ from Ἀβραὰμ Abraham ἕως to Δαυεὶδ David γενεαὶ generations δεκατέσσαρες, [were] fourteen, καὶ and ἀπὸ from Δαυεὶδ David ἕως to τῆς the μετοικεσίας deportation Βαβυλῶνος to Babylon, γενεαὶ generations δεκατέσσαρες, fourteen, καὶ and ἀπὸ from τῆς the μετοικεσίας deportation Βαβυλῶνος to Babylon ἕως to τοῦ the Χριστοῦ Christ, γενεαὶ generations δεκατέσσαρες. fourteen.

All those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah.

Matt. 1:18

τοῦ - δὲ now Ἰησοῦ of Jesus Χριστοῦ Christ the γένεσις birth οὕτως thus ἦν. was. μνηστευθείσης being engaged τῆς the μητρὸς mother αὐτοῦ, of him Μαρίας, Mary τῷ - Ἰωσήφ. to Joseph, πρὶν before συνελθεῖν came together αὐτούς, they εὑρέθη she was found ἐν in γαστρὶ [her] womb ἔχουσα having [a child] ἐκ by πνεύματος Spirit ἁγίου. This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Matt. 1:19

Ἰωσήφ Joseph δέ, now, the ἀνὴρ husband αὐτῆς, of her, δίκαιος righteous ὢν being καὶ and μὴ not θέλων wishing αὐτὴν her δειγματίσαι, to disgrace, ἐβουλήθη decided λάθρᾳ secretly ἀπολῦσαι to divorce αὐτήν. her.

Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.

Matt. 1:20

ταῦτα [on] these things δὲ now αὐτοῦ he ἐνθυμηθέντος, [while] was thinking, ἰδοὺ look, ἄγγελος an angel κυρίου of [the] Lord κατ᾽ in ὄναρ [a] dream ἐφάνη appeared αὐτῷ to him λέγων, saying, Ἰωσὴφ Joseph, υἱὸς son Δαυείδ, of David μὴ not φοβηθῇς do be afraid παραλαβεῖν to take Μαρίαν Mary τὴν [to be] the γυναῖκά wife σου. of you; τὸ the [child] γὰρ for ἐν in αὐτῇ her γεννηθὲν having been conceived ἐκ from πνεύματός Spirit ἐστιν is ἁγίου. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Matt. 1:21

τέξεται she will bear δὲ and υἱόν, [a] son, καὶ and καλέσεις you will call τὸ the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ of him Ἰησοῦν, Jesus, αὐτὸς he γὰρ for σώσει will save τὸν the λαὸν people αὐτοῦ of him ἀπὸ from τῶν the ἁμαρτιῶν sins αὐτῶν. of them.

And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Matt. 1:22

τοῦτο this δὲ now ὅλον all γέγονεν occurred ἵνα that πληρωθῇ might be fulfilled τὸ the thing ῥηθὲν spoken ὑπὸ by κυρίου [the] Lord διὰ through τοῦ the προφήτου prophet

All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:

Matt. 1:23

Ἰδού. look, the παρθένος virgin ἐν in γαστρὶ [her] womb ἕξει. will have [a child] καὶ and τέξεται she will bear υἱόν. [a] son, καὶ and καλέσουσιν they will call τὸ the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ of him Ἐμμανουήλ, Immanuel, which ἐστιν means μεθερμηνευόμενον being interpreted Μεθ᾽ with ἡμῶν us - θεός. God.

“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”

Matt. 1:24

ἐγερθεὶς rising up ἀπὸ from τοῦ - ὕπνου, sleep δὲ then - Ἰωσὴφ Joseph ἐποίησεν he did ὡς as προσέταξεν commanded αὐτῷ him the ἄγγελος angel κυρίου of [the] Lord καὶ and παρέλαβεν he took τὴν the γυναῖκα wife αὐτοῦ. of him,

When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.

Matt. 1:25

καὶ and οὐκ not ἐγίνωσκεν he did know αὐτὴν her ἕως until οὗ ἔτεκεν she bore υἱόν. [a] son; καὶ and ἐκάλεσεν he called τὸ the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ of him Ἰησοῦν. Jesus.

But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
